That’s easy. Right back here in good ol’ sunny, breezy and warm South Florida.
Ok, so we’re a terminal vs. mainline location but there is enough rail traffic to keep any railfan busy and loving every minute of it. Massive 10,000 ft., 15,000 ton FEC intermodal trains twice daily. Several large TOFC’s in between not to mention all the rock and manifest trains. And that’s just on FEC.
Then there’s CSX and their nightime monsters thundering in and out of miami under cover of darkness. Their rails running through the South Florida Rail Corridor which parallels the FEC by no more than a few miles. They share these rails with Tri-Rail and Amtrak which dominate north of MIA during the daytime.
So you see, South Florida has its fair share of railroad action minus the steep grades so you’ll rarely hear the whine of dynamics but you’ll definitely hear the rails sing way before the trains gets to you, which is music to my ears.
