ICRR1964,
If you don’t like retro-mods, why don’t you let Bergie handle it? If it’s as big a problem as you seem to think it is, Bergie will take it down and let everyone know what is and isn’t appreciated. Atlas doesn’t appreciate it on their forum (and the result is very little of it), but they are a tad more strict over there.
Personally, light-grade retro-mods don’t bother me. Not everyone has been on the internet for 10 years and knows even what a Troll is, let alone how to deal with one. So a little light moderation that is more informative than anything else (ie., “Don’t feed the Trolls.”, “Don’t post links to E-bay.”, “Don’t post 1Gb pictures.”, etc.) should be perfectly fine. Some of us who have been around the 'net for a while know what can happen to a group or a forum where “anything goes” and nobody cares. It usually goes, all right. Right down the drain.
However, retro-mods can get out of hand, especially on a moderated forum or group (where retro-mods aren’t the only way to regulate the group). Sometimes people who don’t know any better mistake an honest question for a Troll (easy to do at times, especially when the question is known to be controversial for long-time members, aka MTH, UP lawsuits, Code 55 rail for N, etc.). These threads can get out of control quickly, as accusations (both true and false) fly around and bump into people, causing trouble.
The easiest way to deal with either Trolls or “false accusers” is to either ignore what you think is a Troll or a false accusation, or talk sensibly and seriously about why this kind of behavior is (in one’s opinon) unacceptable in the hopes that the new member will want to learn. Throwing exclamation points around, shouting, name calling, etc. is exactly the worst thing one can do… Sound familiar? Look at your above post. You are telling the people that you are trying to get to cooperate with you to “grow up”, “get a life”, that they have “swelled heads”, you’re using ALL CAPS to shout at
No problem Paul, I was warned by many MR fans at train shows of all the problems this forum has. You are right though, me sticking my nose into a post does not help the issue, I can see that now. I belong to other forums and have never in my life seen so much as you call it spam. I will take your advice and walk away and stick with the MR only.
I thought I would give this forum a chance and was advised by a moderator to just wait it will get better. Paul its not getting any better as it stands right now. You telling me of my wrong doing is fine I can live with that. I appoligise for saying anything at all and will remove my post to save time and pain of others. I was wrong for saying anything and will go along with everyone else on this thread right or wrong. Sorry for the problem I caused for you and all that posted in my response.

“Troll” is an internet term derived from an original word with a similar (in effect anyway) meaning.
To troll is to fish slowly, working potentially lucrative fishing holes and hiding places, with the payoff being more fish caught. Key components include recon, (understanding where the fish are at any given time and why they are there), bait selection, (what is most likely to lure the target fish), a hook (that which captures the fish), and a line, (that which is used to cast the bait and reel in the catch).
Internet trolls usually have conducted extensive recon, and know where to find “fish”, what bait to use, (usually incendiary comments, with pride or obvious points of insecurity as the target), they generally let the fish hook himself, just by taking the bait and pulling at it, and “reeling in the catch” is simply a matter of sitting back and “enjoying” people’s response to their barbs.
If there aren’t any fish, most trollers and trolls will fish elsewhere. Don’t be a fish. Stick your head out of the water, let the fisherman see you laughing at his paltry excuse for fishing skill, once, he will move on, and you can then go about your business. Persistent poachers should be brought to the attention of a game warden or ranger.
I say we give him a G.I. Shower with a Blanket Party to boot!!! Kevin
I think it’s time to move on with this thread, fellas. You’re just giving gunit more to chuckle about…

ICRR1964,
It’s all right to stick your nose into a discussion. That’s why this forum exists. [:)] One should be polite when doing so, even in the face of rudeness (something that is tough to do…I know I forget from time to time).
And just to let you know, what we’re discussing here isn’t “spam”. “Spam” originally dates back to newsgroups (and is actually from a Monty Python sketch), and refers to any posting made to more than three newsgroups. Since this was also used by people advertising their wares (legal or not), this activity then became linked to Unsolicited Commercial E-Mail, or UCE. So technically, spamming only refers to advertisers who send stuff to you without your permission in order to seperate your money from your wallet.
Other useful internet terms are “shill” (having a company employee pose as a regular customer who raves about a product in order to increase sales) and “sock puppet” (when a forum or group member invents another persona in order to carry out attacks or to start arguments…sometimes with themselves).

Paul, I see your point, no problem here. Yes I did get rude, there is no doubt there at all. The troll seekers seem to get more fun out of hurting another member, and to be honest with you, I can see I am wasting allot of time trying to put a stop to it! It will continue no matter what I say or do. Yes this is a forum, but it seems there is some of the memebers have more fun badgering others, thats there right though. The moderators are the ones who can put a stop to this, it seems me voiceing and others too is just a big waste of time on our part. It will never stop from what I have seen so far, there are allot of members who want to learn and share ideas here, I am one of those members. So I will just keep my mouth shut, it would be better for me anyway, and sit back and just stick to the MR. Thanks for the pointers Paul, appriciate your advice and thoughts.
The word “troll” as used to describe internet troublemakers comes from Norwegian and Danish folktales. Trolls are demons, either dwarves or giants, who live in caves or hills, who have magical powers and are frequently mischievous.
Seeing how these folks manage to attract major attention every time they appear on this forum, It’s probably appropriate to attribute magical powers to them.

Where’s a billy goat when you need him. Wait the troll just tripped & fell off the bridge.
Has the population gone up, when I joined there was none
Before I lock this thread (so we can move on), I’d like to give you a little something to keep in mind for the future.
Just because someone is new (or relatively new) to our forum and has posted something something that you disagree with (or that’s inappropriate) does not automatically make them a troll. Please try to refrain from blasting a newcomer as a troll unless you’re darn certain they’re acting as one.
And as always, please e-mail me with anything questionable (editor@trains.com). DO NOT simply post a response to a questionable thread that reads something like “Bergie! Time to do some house keeping!” There’s a great chance I’ll miss your message and then all you’ve done is moved the garbage back to the top of the forum. E-mail me. Thanks!
Thanks,
Bergie
