Actually, rails aren’t all that’s being stolen; in several cases they have stolen signal equipment, in particular the cables, and even caternary! The reason being, obviously, the premium prices being offered for scrap metal and copper. This is in turn due to the demands of the Chinese economy, so the title of this thread should really be “Those crazy Chinese”.
With all of the out of service branch lines over here, it’s really tempting. And you gotta hand it to the crooks! What a unique idea, posing as a salvaging company and even printing up flyers for the neighbors!
