Thin Hydrocal

Anybody use really thin hydrocal or plaster of paris to make a flat river bed? How thin can you make it to sink down flat & still dry hard? Thanks

I’ve done it with plaster of paris. You just have to make sure you have it sealed well along the sides and ends. I save hardened plaster and break it up into chunks. It makes good rocks.

Do you want to make the river, or the river bed from plaster?

I made all of my rivers using plywood as the river bed and Durabond-90 patching plaster as the water. You can mix Durabond as thin or thick as you wish and it will set in approximately the number of minutes represented by the number following the name. The “water” shown is between 1/8"-1/4" thick and was a fairly thick mixture (like peanut butter). I used drywall knives to level it and add the ripples.

I have a very uneven base made from plaster cloth & need to have a portion of it flat to represent the water area. I have used plaster coated plywood in the past when the whole area is flat. hope this explains it. thanks
