Looks like Matt Rose might turn out to be NS’s Knight in Shining Armor. Years ago I thought the final round of mergers would be BNSF/NS and UP/CSX. If its going to happen I hope BNSF comes out on top.
The naval term for this is “a shot across Harrison’s bow”. Sure sounds like a warning to me.
Is there anyone with an IQ above room temperature that did NOT think a consolidation of two class ones would trigger the final merger wave?
Rose out classes Hunter by miles. I suspect when Warren steps down, Rose will take his place.
MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL, AND TO ALL A GOODNIGHT !!!
Warren Buffet and Matt Rose of Berkshire Hathaway’s [BNSF Owner] $66 Billion Cash in Hand sure beats Bill Ackman and Hunter Harrison’s CP going cap in hand to the banks to borrow $30 Billion. Still going to pull the trigger Bill and Hunter?
'Cause your going to get blown out of the water and straight back to retirement in Florida.
At least his reason for talking merger is lightyears ahead of the boys from CP.
Could also be called a ranging shot. The USS New Jersey did one on a land target in the Vietnam War. That shot was all that was needed as they put the round right into the truck park. This might give CP the same idea. RETREAT!!!
Both eastern RR’s are in trouble because of their eroding coal franchises. Of the two, NS is clearly the better property so I would not assume that CSX would be the “logical” target for BNSF. The UP learned the hard–and extremely expensive way–that you’re better off buying the better property (Santa Fe) at a bigger premium than trying to restore /rebuild the weaker property (the SP in their case). Would you rather pay another couple of billion now or $10-$15 billion (or more) over the next 10 years?
Coal is 19th century. If we are concerned about the economy of the New England and Mid Atlantic states, then i think the CP is the better suitor. The CP has the Alberta oil.
I wish BNSF would come after NS. At least the Alabama, Georgia and Piedmont Divisions. It would give BNSF access to Atlanta, Charlotte, Charleston, Savannah and Jacksonville. All large Intermodal terminals.
