Tornadoes hit Union Pacific’s Bailey Yard

its a good thing the tornado didnt hit the whole yard. ive never heard of Bailey Yard closing.

And like everyone always says “It sounded like a train”!!!

Thank God only one person was hurt. What size was the tornado? Sounds like it was a F1 or F2.

“We hid up in the train…” It makes you realize how little safe cover there is out in a rail yard, especially one as large as Bailey. Railroading, the tough, all-weather business.

Gotta be scary as heck to actually see a tornado. I’m pretty good in an emergency but seeing a tornado would do me in.

The main tornado that hit the Yard was an EF3, at least according to the NWS site – http://www.crh.noaa.gov/lbf/?n=tor03182012. The other storm was an EF1. About 15 tank cars wher blown over.

That is one big target.Something really big like that yard cannot hide

North Platte is one of those Tornado-Prone areas. I’m a former railroad crew driver and had a run-in with a tornado
after dropping off a crew at the terminal. The tornado system
was on my tail for a good distance while traveling east on I-80
and too dangerous to exit with this fast moving storm. I’ve including this experience in a book I’m currently writing:
“Confessions of a Railroad Crew Driver”.

I hope the public observation tower wasn’t damaged. That is an awesome place to see the yard.

I’m confused because my former “Brother-in-Law’s” Parents who are from North Platte told me an “Old Indian Legend” said a Tornado will not Touch Down where the River Forks! And North Platte is in an area between the “Fork” of the North and South Platte River’s, so how is it that these Tornado’s hit the town of North Platte and Bailey Yard?!

North Platte is just one of those tornado prone areas.
I’m a former railroad crew driver and had a run-in with one of
those nasty tornadoes a few years back. After dropping off
a rail crew at the main terminal I exited east on I-80 toward
Omaha. In a very short period of time I had a tornado system
on my tail for a good distance. The system was moving too fast for me to make a quick exit so I had to ride it out and
feel the stiff winds pushing hard on the rear of my crew van.
I’ve included this experience in a book I’m currently writing:

“CONFESSIONS OF A RAILROAD CREW DRIVER”.
