Most of us here have probably heard something like:“Atlas torpedo tubeGP-7.” Just what are “torpedo tubes”, and what other locomotive were they on other than the early GP units[?]

They are air tanks on top of the locomotive. On GP7 and GP9 these were used on passenger versions (ex N&W) because the traditional position next to the fuel tank was taken by the water tank for the steam generator.
If memory serves correctly, CNW had some GP35s with “torpedo tubes”.
Some Sacramento Northern GE electric steeplecabs had compressor tanks above the cab similar to the above–they were sometimes called “PT boats” because of the similarity of the tanks to torpedo tubes.
The new Atlas SD-24’s also have T-tubes.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen an SD-24 without them. Hasn’t Atlas been making that model for over 20 years?
