Why does magizines come out a month earilier than they say? Why does Dec issue come out in Nov? Shouldn’t that be called ,Nov issue?? Or is it just by monthly.
Something i’ve always wanted to ask.[:I]
Well Marty, Barry says “there are no dumb questions” but this is a good one,
How about it Rene?
Marty
A lot of other Mags do the same thing but I don’t know why.
Congratulations on your First Place winning photo in the 2004 Garden Railway contest,
your composition and execution are very proffesional.
Once again congratulations
Regards
Gary
I can’t speak for GR because I haven’t paid attention, but some of my car mags actually send 13 issues a year, I think it’s $ reasons. However GR is one of the few I’ve noticed that doesn’t due the October/November type of thing only one month is called out on the cover of GR.
Hi guys,
When GR first started, it had two months listed on the cover. Shortly after Kalmbach bought the publication, they eliminated one of the months, so now we have Feb-April-June-August-Oct-Dec issues.
As for the early publication schedule and release date, I honestly don’t have an answer for you. For a bi-monthly magazine such as GR, the December issue will go on sale Nov. 9 and will remain on sale until early January. Monthlies such as MR are only on sale four weeks.
I’m going to email our Associate publisher, Terry Thompson, and ask him to reply to this. Perhaps he knows more than I do.
Rene
Thanks for bringing this to my attention, Rene. The answer has to do with how newsstands and bookstores keep track of their stock. They use the date on the cover as a kind of expiration date, so if a monthly magazine says “January 2005” on the cover they’ll remove it from their shelves in the beginning of January 2005. The only exceptions are special issues like Kalmbach’s “Great Model Railroads,” which usually have a “sell until” date on their covers, and bi-monthly magazines, which usually remain on sale through the month of their cover date.
It’s a strange way to do business, I admit, and it makes our lives more complicated as well. Right now, for example, most of our staffs are working on their February or March issues, which go to the printer in late November or early December and go on sale in January. Clear as mud, right? However, it’s standard in the publishing industry, and thus it’s nothing that we can change.
Thanks for reading GR,
Terry
Thank you
Mr Thompson for stopping by and saying HI to us. Your answer is as clear as mud… I knew there had too be a good reason and we do live in the Good Ol USA which does alot of things different from the rest of the world.
And thanks Gary , It was one of many photo tries.
BTY: I did send couple of photos to M.R. photo contest, be neat to have GRRing get into their contest.
This dating thing is kinda like all the new “preproduction”, pre order NOW. Its seems to be the HOT thing now.
Thanks RENE

I thought that a lot of the people in publishing were gay and therefor they wouldn’t know what month it was.

PS Australians get there irreverence from the Irish in us all.
MORE IMPORTANTLY, When is Garden Railroads going to go Monthly???
Marc and Rene[?]
I thought we were monthly (er, daily?) on this forum already! [:p][:p]
Rene, Quit evading the question!

Ok, ok Matt, I’ll answer the question. Right now, there are no plans to increase the frequency of the magazine. This has come up in our marketing discussions in years past, but has not materialized. If things should change, we would certainly let you know. But, we’re staying with the bimonthly schedule for the foreseeable future.

I don’t have a problem with that , just put more garden RR pictures in it ,so i get more ideas ,for my GRR. BEN

Hi Rene
Received my new issue today. Enjoying.

Ben,
We’re starting to include more RR pics! We now run a “gallery” several times a year with reader photos, plus have changed the format of the convention preview to be more of a gallery too. Stay tuned to the Feb issue, where we’ll have a gallery of online photos that we don’t have room for in the mag!
Rene, Get back to that marketing meeting! Or will have to find another lobbiest![:D]
Rene
