Watching toy train layouts on you tube has become a hobby within a hobby for me. These layouts range from the very elaborate to the very basic. All of them are worthwhile and fun to watch.There is no such thing as a “bad” layout to me. There is a question I have to ask. Keep in mind this is not a criticism, just a question; Why do a large number of you lay your track right up to the edge of your table with no safety barrier of any kind? Aren’t you afraid your prize locomotive will derail and take a trip straight down to the hard,unyielding floor beneth? I see alot of you run your trains fairly fast around those curves too. Once again, this is not a criticism of your work or your layout, it’s just that inquireing minds want to know.
Not only safty but it looks a lot better if you have about 3" or more from the ties as opposed to 1"
Unfortuanatly in order to get as much layout as possible when I designed mine and made the benchwork the track is too close to the edge.
Just a couple of inches more would look a lot better.
I agree. When I had my layout the two open sides had a road that gave me a visual and physical barrier.

Hey! what model/brand is that engine? It’s pretty neat!
because we all have a little Gomez Addams in us…my outside main is along the edge on three sides, and in 25 years I’ve only had one Lionel turn into a Flyer…
Did it leave any Marx on the floor?
I have had one hit the floor and it hurt. It was my Lionel NORFOLK SOUTHERN DASH 8-40C 4,000 hp DIESEL # 8688 blew the truck sides up and the front coupler. [:O] All in all I was lucky. I have two grand-kids that run my trains at age 6 and 3, and the 3 year old is a boy. [}:)]

The engine is an American Flyer #435 from 1939-1940. It comes from the era when Gilbert took over American Flyer.
The engine headed up the red streamlined passenger cars both years.

The trains bound to fall off eventually if they’re Kusan too fast around the curves. (Yeah it’s a stretch, but I couldn’t pass on getting into the puns too.)
