Track cleaning cars

I was wondering if any of ya’ll know the issue of model railroader that had the article on John Allen’s boxcar/track cleaner. I know this a re-print from a while back but I also recall reading it somewhere but can’t remember where I read it. I would like to build a couple of these as I am a cheap ba***rd and don’t want to spend 40-50 bucks for the Centerline car ( I need several of these for my multiple mainline layout) and I want to leave them in a train consist all the time. Thanks for your help.

Hello SD70Mking,

Model Railroader published an article titled “Track cleaning car using the John Allen method” in April 1988. The article shows how Lou Sassi adapted John’s idea.

You can order a back issue online at http://store.yahoo.net/kalmbachcatalog/mrr880401.html.

Hope this helps,

KALMBACH publishing put out a book that had to do with maintaining your locomotives. That may even be the title, but I’m not sure off hand. They had instuctions on how to build these track cleaning cars inside. They do work very well by the way. This book I think is a must have for any serious model railroader. Check it out.

Hello GJaPRR,

The book you’re referring to is “Maintaining & Repairing Your Scale Model Trains” (in print from Kalmbach) and the information is on page 61.
