I’ve been using brass track since I was young (some 30 years ago). Never made the NS switch, not sure why, just like the brass-probably because it came in my first railroad set. Will DCC have any problems w/brass track? Looking at the MRC PA2 system. Thanks…
The “Nickel-Silver vs. Brass” debate has been raging as long as model railroading has been around. [:)]
As long as you keep the brass track CLEAN, you won’t have too many problems. The best way to do that is just to run it frequently. Of course, the same can be said for NS track, too…it has to be kept CLEAN.
I used brass track in the 60’s-70’s. It was a job to keep it clean all the time. It develops tarnish which is non-conductive and insulates the locomotive(s) from the track. In the early 80’s I discovered nickel-silver track and haven’t looked book. It too develops a tarnish but unlike the brass tarnish it’s conductive and is much easier to keep clean. Plus if you use the GLEAM process on the track constant cleaning becomes a thing of the past.
If brass track works for you, great. If you have good DC operation on your layout then DCC should be OK. I have used brass track on previous layouts.
Since most modelers are now using NS track (I now use Atlas code 83 NS), you may have difficulty finding new brass track and turnouts for your layout.
You don’t have to replace all of your brass track. You can start with NS for your new track and replace the brass track as may become necessary.
