Track Weathering - WOW!

Good looking track DoctorWayne. I used latex house paints to paint mine. Colors are followed by brand and mix numbers. ‘Rusted Rail’ (Olympic 105-8.5, 107-8.5, 109-8.25, 113-10.75) and ‘Rusted Earth’ (Valspar 101-4.25, 109-15.5, 111-8.375, 113-8).Ties are black with some dark brown called ‘Dark Toast’ (Valspar 101-4.5, 107-11.125, 109-2.5, 113-18).

Wayne,

You know the grader kit could be in your hands soon… just a mouse click or two away[}:)]…

Btw I still have a few RGM kits to build yet.

The dirt in my pic was glued down and then sanded to get the dusty look. The grease weathering on the points is Bragdon powders…

The layout does host ops sessions infrequently. I am still building like a madman and the room is small. I end up with huge messes that last for months until something is completed. Cleaning it all up to operate happens only every once in a while.

I did not clean the rail sides or ties at all. For the rail heads I applied, using a Qtip, an application of very light oil. This keeps paint from drying on the top of the railhead. After painting it is easy to wipe off any paint with a cloth, or a stick of balsa.

Appreciate the replies, now all I have to do is get the paint and get started…that could be the hard part.

Getting started often is the most difficult part of many tasks, and that difficulty usually increases with the passage of time. [swg]
Once you have operational track in place, there is, in my opinion, no other activity which is so easy, so cost effective and gives such rewarding results as painting the rails. Right behind this in “bang-for-your-buck” is ballasting. Both of these tasks seem high on a lot of people’s “things-I -hate-to-do” lists, and I can’t understand why. [sigh]

Wayne

Looks like you did a pretty good job, to me!

Thanks Sean[tup]. Apparently you’re one of the few who think so[sigh][(-D].

Amazing job. I just purchsed the Bachman RZ track back and forth. It works fine but looks terrible. Any more tips on how you got it to look like this.

I am also a newbie and building my first somewhat real layout.

Thanks!
