I need some traction tires for my Rivarossi Big Boy. They keep flying off when running on the club layout, and it’s driving me nuts. I heard of Stewart and Concor. I already got ahold of Stewart. But can’t find Concor.

Has anyone had problems with these tires?
traction tires arn’t that good, although some modles there can’t be anything done about them. good luck finding some.
They are generally a help for some locos, but the material gets brittle and flakes over time, in some cases in a few months. So, when new, they work quite well, but if you were to put the loco in a drawer for a year and then try to run it, there is a good chance the tire would disintegrate as soon as you tried to run it.
Also, traction tires don’t let the engine slip. So if you put too many cars behind a loco that has them, you have a good chance of burning out the motor, especially with older Rivarossi Big Boys.

Re- Traction Tires. Rivarossi is now handled by Walthers, but I doubt they will be able to offer much assistance for parts. This lack of parts has always been the problem with Rivarossi in the past ,no matter who the distributor was at any given time. One lead I may
offer to you is a store called Golf Manor Hobbies, they may have ended up with the old
supply of parts from Model Expo.I believe the store is located in either Indiana or Illinois.
You are correct that Stewart made replacement tires for steam locos but these seem to be very difficult to locate also. I do most of the steam loco repair jobs for my club, and we
have some ancient Rivs that have logged thousands of scale miles. Now don’t laugh when I tell you one of my solutions to replace those tires. Clean all grease and oil from the wheel tread once the tire is lost or removed , you then take a good quality ACC glue and fasten one end of a tightly woven cotton thread into the rim valley. Cut off at least two feet of thread from your spool and when you are sure the first drop of ACC is dry, hand wind several turns of the thread in the direction that ,if the motor was running the loco forward it would tighten. Keep the windings snug and apply ACC across the threads liberally, let dry. Repeat this until you have filled in the rim valley completely. Finish off by clipping thread and glueing it firmly in place. When dry run loco and if need be add more ACC. This method can be reversed with an x-acto blade and elbow grease ! I have a Berkshire,a y-6b,a Santa Fe, and a Big Boy all running on these Thread Tires. They will last quite a while in use, but get into the habit of checking them regularly. Happy Steaming, and best of the season ; hornhook.
Golf Manor Hobbies is in Cinncinati, their website is www.GOLFMANORHOBBIES.com (they aren’t too fast on emails) or phone them at: (513) 351-3849 3pm-9pm Est. they probably can fix you up with some traction tires the last time I dealt with them they had a good supply of older parts. The traction tires were also used on the newer Rivarossi RP25 flanged Big Boys, Alleghenys, Berkshires and Challengers.
