My run today to Lombard took me through downtown Chicago on the way there. I started taking pics from Gary IN all the way through. Im sure for those of you who live in Chicago or in the area, some or all of these pics may not be new to you. Sometimes inspiration can be fun. Even included a pic of the Sears tower and downtown area.
Try not to mind the crack in the windshield in some of the pics…unfortunately some of the trucks that we have are junk. Also the one with the large bridge was somewhat tough to take, but at least I got some of it in the picture. Also the one with the Conrail diesel was pulling a caboose. And as for the last pic, nice to see real pantographs in action!
wow, ive lived here in chicago my whole life, and aside from riding the el every day, i barely see that many trains… were those wisconsin central hoppers riding on the el tracks? it almost looks like it there… which expressway were you coming in on?
It’s the old B&O Chicago Terminal now CSX line coming off the old Wisconsin Chicago link from west of DesPlaines Avenue in Forest Park running east to around Central Avenue in Chicago – in a cut along the south side of the Eisenhower Expressway. Wisconsin Central and CN have trackage rights.
Cool pics,
I have never been to Chicago, always wanted to visit though.
The shot of the Sears tower reminds me of one of my favorite films.
Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. I hope you were driving a Ferrari 250 GT[
My parents live in Glen Ellyn, One brother in Glen Ellyn, 2 sisters in Wheaton, one brother in St. Charles. 1 brother in St. louis, and one in Basking Ridge NJ. I like watching the trains as they progress through Glen Elyn and Wheaton. There is a lot of traffic there. Nice pics.
Nice shots, Chris. I was only a few blocks away from the Sears Tower. They’re close to beginning serious expressway work along this route in about a month.
Reminds me of the CBS series Early Edition. Gary Dobson frequently seemed to end up on the train or near the tracks in Chicago, and on bridges or highways.
The Wisconsin Central 4-Bay ACF Center Flow Covered Hoppers could be the basis for a future Lionel Unit Train Set featuring a Wisconsin Central GP30 Diesel-Electric Locomotive and Extended-Vision Caboose
