I’m posting this here because I think some of you “Tech Oriented” whizzes that frequent this forum may have the answer to this one.
I’ve read before that there are or were websites where one can download train sound ring tones onto a cell phone for a fee. One site supposedly had various train sounds, including diesels. Regretfully I didn’t write down that website address and now I can’t find it.
After being bombarded with hearing all kinds of ringtones eminating from other people’s cell phones, train sounds would sure be different and out of the ordinary.
Have you guys seen these websites and/or have used them?
A Google search didn’t turn up much, just a lot of tones for the band “Train” and some really poor synthesized effects. You might try making your own with one of ringtone creators available at cnet:

I think most cell phones (at least those sold in my area) are “locked” - you cannot enter your own sounds or screensavers. They are theoretically able to, but this featured is locked out. The phone companies want a monopoly on this, because they can charge you for the ringtones, wallpaper, games, etc.
I’ve heard of kits on eBay that come with cords so you can connect your phone to your computer, and use the enclosed program on a CD to modify your phone so it will accept your own material. A friend of mine who is a computer network administrator told me about this, and he got one of the kits, but wasn’t able to get it to work for him. I wouldn’t even bother!
I just got a new cell phone myself on Friday, comes with a 1.3MP camera and video capability too. It also has a “Mini Flash” memory card that can be removed and inseted into an SD size card to download photos and videos. Also came with a cord to connect the phone to the computer, but all the manual says it is for is to print off photos on a compatible printer. No method of adding ringtones or other things to the phone though. And I don’t have any interest in paying our local phone company $2.00 for a ringtone!
I have a Motorola that takes a mini memory card as well, and according to the manual you can put mp3 sounds on the card and use them as ringtones, but you’ have to keep the card in the phone. I wouldn’t waste my money on a card and an adapter for my PC.
Must be phone dependant. Mine (a Samsung A920) can only use downloaded sounds for ringtones. I can and have loaded MP3 songs into it, but they will just play as songs in the built in media player (with stereo speakers even!). The phone came with a 32MB MiniFlash card and an SD card adapter. I ordered a 256MB card for it on eBay so I can take more photos and videos if I want to. The videos aren’t the best, enlarging them to anything beyond the few inches square screen makes them really grainy. Only 30 second worth of videos at time too. I had to download Apple’s Quicktime program to be able to view the videos on my computer as the other programs I have won’t recognise the file type.
My phone works with MP3 files, but there’s no removable card. But the phone does have Bluetooth. So I picked up a cheap (I thinkit was $10) Bluetooth adapter that plugs into a USB port (I got mine at WalMart). I forget the program I got, but it’s a free program that allows you to trim MP3 files, so I can cut out whatever portion of a song or sound file I want and copy it to my phone to use as a ringtone. No paying for data transfer on my plan or anything. And I can use any of the thousands of sound files I already have. Plus I can also go the other way - transfer pictures taken with the phone’s camera to my PC. The alternative was to buy the special USB cable for the phone, but that carries a list price of $30. Plus I cna also use the Bluetooth adapter with my work phone - so now I have fun ringtones on there even though we are not allowed to use any data transfer with that phone. Connecting via bluetooth doesn’t use any service plan time. --Randy
Anyone know where I can download standard diesel crossing horn sounds? Two longs, one short, one long. If I can find it I just might load it into my phone so I can play it by itself if and when I want to.
BTW if you’re looking for cell phone accessories - data cords, batteries, cases, car adapters, etc… check out eBay, there are hundreds! Rather than paying $25.00 for a car adapter I ordered one from eBay, cost me $6.00 including postage. Also a nice soft leather case for $15.00. I paid the retail list prices for these in the past because I didn’t know there were alternatives. Never again!
Just look up in the cell phone listing, and list the model and brand of your phone to see all what is available.
Check out these websites and listen to the sounds. I believe most are MP3. I’ve downloaded a number of them and saved to a jump drive so my friend, a skilled technician, can edit them for uploading to Lok Sound decoders.
The GE website has some GEVO sounds for ringtones. I saved the files to my desktop and bluetoothed it to my cell phone. I liked one in the upper link provided above by AntonioFP45 , listed as “K5LA_L&N_Runby_KRSY.wav: This is Ken Kanne’s speeder car equipped with a K5LA.” The sound is nice, clear and crisp and there are no other deep bass diesel engine/train sounds like in many others. The teeney speakers in my cell won’t reproduce the low notes. Anyway I converted it to an MP3 and it now resides in my phone, but not as a ringer. I can select it just like a song. Just as well, as I don’t really want a train horn going off in my pocket at inopportune times!
