Suspected robbers arrested after train hits their truck
ENCINITAS – It took an Amtrak train to stop two men who allegedly robbed two convenience stores Sunday, a county sheriff’s spokesman said.
Deputies arrested the suspects after the train struck their green Ford Explorer on the tracks along Highway 101 and Basil Street at 5:18 a.m., said Sgt. W. Dreyer, of the Encinitas sheriff’s station.
Almost as smart as the bank robbery wheel man who ran out of gas idling outside the bank his cohorts were robbing in LA. They came out, got in the car just as the cops arrived and were aprehended. The driver was apprehended when he sprinted back to the scene carrying a gas can.
I doubt if either of our two suspects had a job offer from NASA pending.
In the end, the stores will never get their money back. Amtrak will have to pay to fix the engine. The railroad will pay to fix the tracks and/or roadbed. And the taxpayers will pay living expenses for the buffoons.
Probably would have been better for everyone if they had died…oh yeah, the negligence lawsuit, I forgot. [#dots]
Had to check Google Maps for the location of Basil street - a few blocks south of the Leucadia Blvd crossing - wonder what in the heck prompted the driver to go that far off of Highway 101.
For those not familiar with San Diego county, Leucadia and Cardiff-by-the-Sea are parts of the city of Encinitas.
