Train Wrecks on SpikeTV

Did anyone else see this program on Sunday afternoon? The grade crossing accidents were pretty graphic but maybe they should show this program in Drivers Ed and in remedial traffic schools. The Downers Grove pedestrian footage on the Q-Metra line was a bit too close to home as I once saw someone miss getting hit by inches.

Yes, I saw it, and what an abomination! My family was upset (or perhaps amused) that I was yelling at the television! Specifically, the announcer’s insistence in calling Cajon Pass “El Cajon Pass.” I’ve been to both Cajon Pass and El Cajon, and know they’re not really anywhere near one another.

And the railroads agreed a couple years ago to install emergency brakes? How about that. Anyone tell George Westinghouse?

Yep I saw the first 15 minutes of it but my son wouldn’t eat his breakfast before we were to head out for church, so I had to turn it off–yes, I’m a @#$%!!! I was actually looking for Rails Ahead and came across this show on Spike. I hope that it will be on again.

Just another way to make the railroads look bad!

It is an older show and they just replay it randomly under different names. Wild videos, extreme clips, ect…

It’s a great show…If you turn the volume all the way down. Just about everything out of John Bernell’s mouth is wrong.

I loved the way “Lenexa KS” was called “Lexena, KS”. I live about 10 minutes from Lenexa. And I agree, Burnell gets irritating.

What does the industry expect when its profile is so far below the radar of the public ?The fact that it is either a negitive image aka toxic spills-accidents-suicides intentional or otherwise-traffic tie ups lies directly in their laps Not everyone is a railfan nor particularly cares about trains anymore than they do about buses.I wish it were otherwise but the industry is in the 19th century when it comes to public relations, Lifesaver and 844 excepted.
In another thread, Minnesota is tn the midst of a bruhaha over DM&E. Where are the railroad flaks? Where do railroad interests align with public interest? Ever since passenger trains went the way of the buffalo, that linkage is gone.

Oh darn I am sorry I missed this program, I would of taped it. I hope Spike is going to run a re- run.

I think I’m going to back up up829 here in saying that the DMV, and DOT needs to have videos like this generated for the public. In particular I would like to see such videos in driver’s ed courses, and on CDL courses as well. I also think that the DOT needs to put more information about safety at grade crossings in the driver’s manual, and CDL manual. I also think they need to crack down on rules at and around grade crossings.

Well in general I think they need to show results or actuall collisions on some of these videos in terms of highway or surface road related accidents to new drivers. In particular novice drivers that are taking Driver’s ed courses. Same with CDL.

I also think that the driving test is to easy, I passed it with flying colors when I took it. We also have a lot of people that shouldn’t really be issues liciences because of this easy test. The DOT needs to put the driver through real life situations on the road, or on really conjested highways. They also need to have the parallel parking protion of the test on a heavily trafficed road, under pressure.

Sarah - Inexperience is a major problem - the reason many states are moving toward graduated licensing.

This morning we were dispatched to a rollover accident. The two young ladies weren’t seriously injured (they didn’t go to the hospital - and their dad is a doc). The driver had had her license for one month. She wandered onto the shoulder, over-corrected, over-corrected for that, and ended up with the Jeep Grand Cherokee on it’s roof…

Those shows love to add lots of sound effects. I love how you can hear the sirens plain as day from the news helicopter. Kind of like how they used to occasionally screw up the sirens on “Emergency…”

I disagree…it’s not like you can steer an engine into a vehicle purposefully or swerve to avoid an idiot at a crossing. I’m no engineer but I’d be willing to bet money that there’s no train engineers out there who go to work saying “How many people can I hit/scare/wound/maim today?”

Yeah Bunnell can get irritating…I see this as a reminder, which I personally don’t need, that you need to be heads up around RR X-ings and not to chance things.

Are you kidding? Each engineer has his own personal reverser that he uses his entire career. Each time you squash some moron, you get another notch in your reverser. When engineers gather together (like at the layover hotel or retirement parties) they sometimes brag about how many they hit and use their reversers a trophies.

Seriously though, you are quite right. In fact, it is more like, : “How many close calls am I going to have today, and god forbid, am I going to hit anyone?”
