Trains News Wire EXCLUSIVE: Museum, university discuss locomotive donation

“Abandonment was instituted by the city of South Bend and the university, which coveted the unused right-of-way for a recreation trail.” Apparently the city of South Bend and the university forgot about the commandment “Thou shalt not covet.”

I still say that truck driver deserves tons of credit. But apparently somebody forgot to notify him or his employer about the grade crossing’s vertical clearance issue. A problem which could have easily been solved in advance with a few truckloads of crushed rock placed on both sides and graded fairly level. Then when finished, get a loader to scoop it up and truck it back to where it came.

Has “Il Papa” approved and sent money?

NDU can get the coal originating by rail. Instead of trucks, build a conveyor belt from the railroad tracks to the furnace for the power plant.

The university cannot get coal by rail period. The Michigan Central connecting track has been removed entirely.

If ND&W was never a common-carrier, why was STB approval necessary to take it up?

To Mr. Hays of Montana:
Why would the Vatican have to approve the donation of this locomotive by the University of Notre Dame to the Hoosier Valley Railway Museum, and why would it send money? To whom would it send money? Did you even read the article? The University is DONATING the locomotive; it is not buying it.
