You’re confused I think, the Luddites are the other party.
All I can say in reference to a top official from the Executive Branch of this administration visiting a major rail facility is, “It’s about time!”. Since taking office in early 2009 it’s been nothing but talking the talk and not even coming close to walking the walk from these people.
Mr. Obama has visited auto plants several times crowing about how his administration has “saved” the industry and “saved” the jobs of the auto workers. Not once has Mr. Obama or Mr. Biden visited the Nippon Sharyo plant at Rochelle, IL or the Kawasaki plant at Yonkers, NY, or the CAF plant at Elmira, NY where what I call the “stealth” cars for the Amtrak LDs are allegedly being built. Look at the tv ads from GM&Chrysler and you’ll see how well Mr. O and Mr. B have been doing for the auto industry. But the fledgeling rail passenger car building industry continues to fly under the radar of mainstream news reporting and advertising.
A year or so ago Mr. Obama made a well-publicized visit to the Ford assembly plant at Hegewisch, IL on Chicago’s far south side. But while visiting the city that was his home and launch pad to the presidency, he never ventured to the CREATE
project sites where the choke points of Chicago region rail freight and rail passenger movements are slowly being addresed with new infraststructure alleviated.
So I’m pleased to see the vice president out on the tracks. Now if the dual projects of a fourth track at Rensselaer depot and the second main up West Albany Hill actually kick off in the Spring, after Amtrak top mnagement and NYStateDOT blew off the 2013 construction season, let’s see if “Amtrak Joe” comes up to celebrate the long-awaited capacity expansion.
