Trains Presents: R.J. Corman’s QJ-type steam locomotives

Thank you for posting this video. I had the honor of being at the throttle for the trip across CSX and into Lexington but it was the work of the RJC ‘steam team’ that made it happen: Dennis Daugherty, Robert Franzen, Kelly Barnnet, Lewis Hicks, Kelly Lynch and Joe Holbrook. Being a young railroad manager in my mid-twenties at the time, I had no idea of what these guys accomplished during the trip and the months leading up to it. I have a great respect for each of them. An even smaller team of mostly volunteers allowed the Derby trip two years later in 2010 to run without issue.
To the best of my knowledge, that May 2008 run on a short portion of the LCL subdivision marked the last time live steam has operated on a CSX mainline?

Thank you for this video. Now in Scotland I miss the North American type of railroading. Seeing a steam train under her own power is a real treat. Wish I was there to see her in person.

When did R. J. Corman purchase a SECOND QJ? Last I heard they only had one.

Iowa Interstate had two, since transferred to a volunteer not-for-profit organization.

Thank you R. J. Corman and Trains for making this video possible.

Delighted that steam once again has returned to Kentucky and to historic “L&N Country,” where once L&N’s
finest in steam, “Big Emma” 2-8-4s, ran! Thanks to the vision of the late Mr. Corman.

I hope to see these engines back up and running someday

Thank You SSSSS very much for the outstanding video. Thank You Corman family.

Outstanding!

Can’t say I like the red driver centers and pilot, nor the semi-‘skyline’ casing, but it does look good! Thank you, RJC!

Looked great to me and enjoying the sharing of the Video and scenes along the line

good looking engine and very nice video. Thank you.

The reason the Chinese and some other railways painted their locomotive drivers red was to make it easier to see possible cracks or other defects on the drivers. At least that’s what an old German engineer told me.

excellent video. I hope more steam will run again

I have not seen this locomotive in action, but would love to see it upfront and personally! What a fine sound it has, and it would be ashame to take it out of service. Lets hope the FRA gives it an extension!
