Transformer Options

Hey gang, I would like some opinions and facts on transformers. I just built my new O FasTrack layout and am looking to purchase 2 new transformers this winter. I currently have my old KW and a new Lionel 80 watt transformer for the layout but I need more power and newer power supplies. (Need to be able to operate whistle and bell features.) The layout is 8’6" x 13’10" and runs three trains on seperate loops. I have no TMCC or DCS equpment currently. Traditional or RailSounds only.

I guess my question would be, which transformers do you reccomend? I know MTH, Lionel, etc. all have a big model on the market, which are the most reliable, easiest to get repaired, ease of use, etc.? I have dual motor Fs, Trainmasters, etc., Post War power, and plan on having accesories and lighting in all of my buildings. Any opinions would be appreciated, biased and unbiased! LOL !

I feel that the new ZW offers the most flexibility in terms of power. The package comes with 2 - 180 Watt power supplies and you can add another 2 at a later date. That will give you 720 watts, 180 watts each on four channels. The ZW is also command ready so that if, or when, you decide on command control all you need are the CAB unit and base.

I will add a second vote for the New ZW. Also keep the KW and the 80 watt transformer(CW-80?) they will be useful for powering lights and accessories. Not only will that keep accessories from drawing power from the Transformer(s) powering trains, but it will also allow you to fine tune the voltages to accessories, such as building lighting, to get a nice interior illumination, without looking like the sun is inside your buildings. Also by using less than maximum voltage on your building lights, it not only look better, but your bulbs will last a LOT longer, even lowering the voltage just a couple volts can make a big difference in bulb life.

I would Recomend the MTH Z-4000 I am a proud owner of a couple of Post war Lionel ZW Transformers and love the operation, However When i went to purchase a New lionel ZW the hobby shop that i have been dealing with for years told me stories about the new ZWS. Also I know the owner of this shop and has always been fair and unbiased when dealing with me or any other hobbiest. 85% Returns due to the Tmcc parts that are included locking up throttles and having to bring the unit into the hobby shop to reset it.

I use my old Lionel ZW’s and MTH Z-750’s or 1000’s and the Z-4000

I have had my 4000 for a couple of years now and i have had no problems with it in the least.

Thanks for the input guys, any one else have any comments? I will probably go with either an MTH or Lionel unit. The more comments, horror stories, compliments and issues, the better.

Well I just got my MTH Z4000 transformer last night and hooked it up less than an hour ago. What a difference! It was like having a 4 cylinder Ford Pinto, pulling the motor out and exchanging it with a 351 Cleveland V8 block. The power output difference between the Z4000 and my tired and worn old KW is just amazing. My Williams Pennsylvania Hudson seemed kind of slow with not much of a top end when powered by my Lionel KW, but now it flies around my layout! I was hoping to buy two Z4000s and will probably wait another 12 months to buy a second won. With a price of $400.00 I could not justify purchasing two of them to my wife!!! I can wait though, I am very impresssed with the MTH transformer! [:D] Cobrabob.

Thanks to Bob over at Parma Hobby in Parma, Ohio for reccomending a fine unit. And thanks for the fair price! [:D]

I have two MTH Z1000’s and a Z750 transformer(without throttle pack powering my DCS unit). The Z1000’s work very good, not able to afford a Z4000 yet, price tag a bit high. Also using a post war ZW for my Williams engines. I use the smaller watt transformers for accessories and lighting.

The reason I don’t like the Z4000 is that it only has two power handles and the other two outputs are for accessories, I want a transformer to run trains with-not power accessories, especially when I put out $400.00. I am not knocking the Z4000, but I want a transformer to run trains with!

I have a KW, RW, and various other transformers but the Z-1000 quickly became my favorite for everything, especially Williams. You can have two Z-1000’s new for 144.00 for both.

If you are looking to buy new then go with a new ZW. Have had mine for years and Zero problems with it. If you want used then go with a used PW ZW.

Roger, you spent a little more than I did for a new Z1000. I bought one at a train show for $60.00 and it had both pieces with it. The Z750 power supply I bought for $15.00, guess I just got some good buys.
