Trip To Larry's Truck & Electric...Need Some Help

I am planning a trip this month to visit Larry’s Truck & Electric in McDonald, OH. I know nothing about the area as I have never been to Ohio and the farthest East I’ve been was Lansing, MI. I have a list of quesitons and getting any of the answered would mean a lot.

  1. Where is the facility?

  2. Is there a good railfanning location nearby?

  3. Is there access to LTE with/without permission?

  4. What is there to do in the area?

  5. How many locomotives are currently there?

Thanks for any info you might have on LTE.

WCfan
had to check the map. the area you are looking at is south of Warren Ohio.Places like bellevue(ns) strongsville (csx) willard(csx) are not far out of the way from the turnpike. There is also a B&O restaurant(brewery) in the area too.
hope this helps
stay safe

  1. Where is the facility?

CSX Newcastle Sub milepost BG 82.31. I can’t find my directions anymore. Sorry.

  1. Is there a good railfanning location nearby?

There is a crossing down the street from the bridge used to access LTE. The sign reads BG 82.31.

  1. Is there access to LTE with/without permission?

You may want to call.

  1. What is there to do in the area?

Not a whole lot.

  1. How many locomotives are currently there?

Lots. I would say at least 75+ at any given time.

What is this place – LTE? Scrapyard or ?? - Not from your area but interested to know more about it >

The restaurant is in the B&O station in Youngstown, Ohio about 6 miles from LTE.

I remember reading a while back that an ex Santa Fe/Wisconsin Central FP45 is at this place. Wonder what will become of it?

LTE is a locomotive graveyard. It’s the cream of all crops. If you know of a locomotive, most likely, it is in thier yard. I just found out they currently have 400+ locomotives in three yards with four tracks in each. Locomotive go there for rebuilding or scrap. I would have to say 90% of all switchers get rebuilt and leased. Lately, it has been the ex-SP/SSW Tunnel Motors being rebuilt/repainted and leased. If you go to railpictures.net you can search “Larry’s” and you will see some photos taken from there.

The FP45 is there along with 6654 and another ex-SF/WC F-45. They are set aside for rebuild/repaint/lease. They will be saved at this point. It is possible they will be like the Tunnel Motors and be in thier lease fleet and show up anywhere in the US/Canada, with added black paint to almost everywhere visible. But that doesn’t bother me, as long as the F45’s don’t go for scrap.

Hey thanks for the information - was not aware something like this exists in the US . Sort of like the Barry Scrapyard for steam in the UK – but for diesel loco,s – glad they do save some .

I went East from IL .this past July and wanted to visit this site but the weather was crummy and passed it up.

There is a site that gives a great description of Larry’s from a member of the ELHS that was there in Sept., 2003. It may encourage you to go there as I wanted to.

Good Luck!

I am glad to hear the tunnel motors are being rebuilt. Too bad they are being repainted.

WCfan4ever,

Thank you for the news! Good to know that EMD cowls are not extinct! [;)][:D]

Curious: The “45 series” had 20 cylinder 645 diesels when new. With today’s high fuel prices I wonder if these will be re-engined with rebuilt prime movers, have 4 connecting rod/ pistons disconnected, or have the turbo chargers removed. [:p]

Cheers!

I know none of the 45 series have been rebuilt at Larry’s yet. All the regular SD45’s have been scrapped. It will be interesting to find out what they do with them…only time will tell.

Dates are now set for the trip. It was supposed to be this month…but work won’t allow. I will be heading that direction Sep.8th-12th. I hope the remaining WC’s last that long.

How far away are some of the hotspots in the area for railfanning? Any trackside hotels in the area?

Center Street on the southeast side of Youngstown has a crossing of CSX and NS. All CSX and most of the NS traffic in the area passes this point.

Does LTE sell parts of the locos they have(IE a headlight)?

From the pics I’ve seen of the facility, I instantly thought… What a great subject to base a switching layout on. There could literally be any kind of power you could think of. Anything could be possible.

Better yet, how 'bout a Larry’s Truck and Electric bowling shirt…do they have a company store?

They should be able to, I don’t see why not. I emailed CN a while back about getting a set of airhorns off a WC. They gave me LTE’s # and told me to call them to get a set. Well, CN removed most of them before shipment so I never got a set from LTE. I’m sure they would be willing to sell anything off a locomotive. I’m sure all loco dealers are alike. I bought a WC cab-door off of the ex-WC 1504 from Northern Illinois and Wisconsin Railway for $50! Shipping is the killer…I only had to go to Kansas City to pick it up because the locomotive was being scrapped by Midwest Locomotive. Do you have thier phone number?

Hey Dave [:)]

How was the trip?
