Here’s some news and history about two SD40Rs being endangered. #2002 (ex-SP #7356) and #2003 (ex-SP #7357). Both of which were rebuilt from SD40s by SP at their own Sacramento shops, which could also be known as the “Sacramento Locomotive Works”.
How this happened was because of the Trona Railway (TRC) starting to purge their locomotive roster, or cutting down their roster, and they have scrapped SD40-2s 2007, 2008 and 2009. They went from scrapping an SW1200 in 2021, and then scrapping an SD9E in 2023, to cutting down the SD40 family off their roster. (SD40, SD40-2 and SD40T-2). And these two SD40Rs are the biggest highlights of what I call this event name “Trona Railway’s endangered diesels”.
In my opinion, it feels like a Cowl Rambles video just waiting to happen, and I hope Cowl Unit Productions does a video on this.
Especially TRC #2003, which is still wearing its SPSF colors.

History of TRC 2002:
It was built in May 1966, originally as SP 8471, EMD SD40, SP Class EF630-1, it was rebuilt on March 9, 1981, emerging as SP 7356, EMD SD40R, SP Class EF630LR-2. It was retired by UP on February 7, 2001, and sold to the Trona Railway (TRC) where it was renumbered to TRC 2002.
History of TRC 2003:
It was built in February 1966, originally as SP 8421, EMD SD40, SP Class EF630-1, it was rebuilt on March 12, 1981, emerging as SP 7357, EMD SD40R, SP Class EF630LR-2, repainted into the SPSF “Kodachrome” in 1986. It was retired by UP on May 22, 2001, and sold to the Trona Railway (TRC) in 2002 where it was renumbered to TRC 2003.
Why should they be saved?
This is because 7357 is the second last SP locomotive still wearing SPSF colors, meaning that if it gets scrapped, SP 2873 would be the last SPSF locomotive standing. If any museum springs into action, we can save history. Especially for SPSF. Even if the museums just take 7357, we’re still saving SPSF history.
