I cannot figure out how to do VAT and pounds and make it do a credit card (U.S. $$).
I emailed them but no response yet and my cell phone has no overseas service.
Anyway, there was sticker shock when I saw the 17% VAT. They must tax the heck out of folks there.
AND, I’m wondering why we have to pay tax in the first place? When we order stuff in the US we don’t pay tax if we do it over the internet?
I’m not sure why there are so many Brits (as well as Aussies) who are garden railroaders compared to indoor small scale railroaders, but I guess I’ll eventually have to learn how to make monetary transactions with these over the pond people.
Try calling card company to see if they will convert for you. VAT is what you think it is, add the 17% to the cost in Pounds then convert to US$. You mite try to find thier source and contact them. You Know the old back door.

You don’t pay the tax, they do.
My understanding from dealing with Oz business is they pay it, then at a pre-determined time they submit the proper paperwork showing sales outside of Oz and get a refund.
Sounds like somebody is double-dipping, like compaines that charge you 3% to run a card, even though that is SPECIFICALLY prohibited in the Merchant Businees Card agreement I have.

VAT - value added tax - is charged at 17.5% in the UK and is payable on goods bought and retained in the UK. If you are dealing with a UK supplier e-mail/fax/phone them first to make sure that they don’t charge VAT on export orders.
I garden railroad because I can’t see my N guage as well as I used to do, plus a RR in the garden means the garden gets done. Remember, garden railways started in the UK and we tend to treat them a little bit different than you guys, for us they’ve been around since early last century, gauge 1 brit outline. As for all of us, it’s our hobby and it is world wide.

Ivan Prior is not far from where I work David. If you would like to send me an e-mail I will pass on the information for you. The IP Eng budget chassis is very good -but the motor can be a little puny -it is possible to replace it with an SME motor that takes the same screw centres but is rated at 3W working. Cost of the SME motor is £0.80p. Drill out the hole to 10mm in 1mm increments -and take it slowly!!! the POCAN (nylon +glass) worm will need drilling out BY TWISTING THE BIT IN YOUR FINGERS ONLY to 2.5mm. Lubricate worm and spur with Lithium Moly grease, run in for 10 mins and then clean and re-grease. The gears will change colour (from the grease) but then they run for years.

That’s what we do on here, help each other out with whatever’s being asked at that moment. We all feel a bit daft every now and then, but that’s - for me anyway - all part of the fun.

Perhaps I should clear something up - the VAT is included in the price quoted on screen as the purchase price. Over here in the UK the price you see is the price you pay. (Unlike North America where you add it on top of the sticker price). As someone has rightfully replied; goods leaving the UK are exempt from VAT. As a sub clause ask the company you purchase from to send the goods by letter post (if possible), instead of parcel post, to avoid paying Tax / Duty on arrival in USA. This tricks works for goods posted from USA to the UK so it should work the other way as well.
So not quite the shock you thought you’d get looking at our pricing structure!
