Tucson may open streetcar line without full car fleet
Did someone forget a preformance clause in contract
The Tucson streetcar implementation has been plagued from the start. Besides the fact that a Trains article pointed out that the cost per mile far exceeds any other transit project in the United States by 2-3 times, the city is already looking at increasing fares for existing bus lines and cutting service. Part of the cutback involves combining routes, something that can’t be done with a fixed streetcar system. Additionally, plans for future maintenance and support funding are vague and inconsistent. It’s a shame that with all the freeway expansion in the area that some form of public rail transit couldn’t have been incorporated into the center of the freeways from outlying areas into the downtown area.
