We are getting ready to start building some tunnels and are looking for some help, ideas , pictures on how to build tunnels. We are giong to have one large one that will have two levels of track to it and a mountain on top. The mountain will be made of cement i found a article on building mountains using this method. Hopfully we do not get in over our heads. Any help with photos or ideas will be greatfully be appreciated. Thanks in advance

I am sure there are other threads on tunnels try putting tunnel or tunnels in the search box and do a further search of the forum and see what turns up.

The search function comes in very handy sometimes its well worth having a go at it on other things, as you never know what useful gems will turn up.

Hope to see pictures as you progress.

Make sure you no matter what you do you have good access tunnels are a know trouble spot.

But they do add something to the railway in the the train does seem to be going some where department

I have ten tunnels on my layout. All were made of cement bricks and blocks, glued together with Elmer’s urethane glue. I made cast concrete slabs to cover them. Then I built up the mountains over the tunnels. My mountains are all made of natural rock.

The longer tunnels have removable slabs for access, which also serve as steps on the upper level pathway. I textured the inside of the tunnels to look like rough stone, at least near the ends. On some of the tunnels the middle is painted flat black.

i think you have two ways of building this tunnel

1. get cinder blocks, and place it were ever you would want your tunnel, then get big slabbs of rockand place it around the cinder blocks to form a mountain.
1. build a retaining wall by a hillside and use a huge pipe, big enough for a train to fit through, and then use all that ecxess dirt and cover the retaining walland the huge pipe to form a hillside.


Remember, there is no wrong way of doing this project. Choose the best way you think its possible and have fun with it![:D]

The tunnel is now mostly covered with ivy and is looking much better.
