Any Diesel!
Steam the only way to go!

Steam the only way to go!
I think the opposite.
Beauty is definitely in the eye of the beholder…but…for steam it would have to be the P&LE Berkshires. For diesels it would have to be anything painted in SP Bloody Nose or BN.

The ugliest locomotive was the the Alco DH-643.
Many think the Frenchies built some ugly steam locos. Just what do you expect when you have frogs designing locomotives? And the ugliest locomotive of all time and beyond is called the Steisel. I appeared briefly in MR some years ago.
Tom
that really exists?
i wouldnt 'diss the French too much, afterall they invented the Guillotine ![:0]
French and Indian Engines are the UGLIEST.
diesel - the Alco RS-2 & 3
electric - the Pennsy GG-1
steam - the N & W J (and any other so-called “streamlined” steam locomotive)
Sorry. I have to disagree with all three of them.
My vote is for the trainmaster diesel.
Enjoy
Paul
Me too. All are beautiful. (especially the J)
man, you’re like my polar opposite or something[:p][;)]

Are you sure you don’t mean the most beautiful locomotives? All three you named are awsome. I can’t image why you would think that. Oh well, to each his own. [sigh]
Hello 4884,
Hmmm, I wonder where you got that idea. It is common knowledge in Southern England but I didn’t know the word had spread. The Austerity class Q1 (flying dustbin) was the brainchild of the New Zealand engineer Oliver Bulleid and was built specifically to minimum cost and material.
Oliver’s sense of humour does show in the exaggerated ugliness but surprisingly this little 46 ton loco was the most powerful 0-6-0 ever built in Britain. On the other hand his Pacifics are the most attractive locomotives I have ever seen although they do have the unfortunate nickname of Spam Cans.
Steam - the Camden and Amboy 6-2-0
Diesel - any of the NYC early experimental road engines.
Electric - the NYC “Q” class
There is a diesel loco that the LIRR has that I think is without a doubt the ugliest loco ever to ride the rails. I think its a D-30 or something? I can’t remember the model designation, but boy is it ugly. I think EMD built it.
But is ugly, especially in the case of steam locomotives, really a bad thing?
To me it ws one that belonged to AT&SF> It looked very much like a bulldogs face. Problem is I can not remember what it was. Someone out there will know the one I mean. Got a picture of it somewhere.[:D]
Don’t forget NYC’ s experimental jet powered car with the number plates for a wind shield. The thing looked more like a failed sub-marine.
