Ugliest Locomotive

What do you think the ugliest locomotive is? In my opinion, it’s the British Q1 0-6-0T. (no fighting![;)])

The Big Boy (just kidding)! The new GE AC44EC and the SD70ACe.

To me it would be Garretts,

Most non-American steam looks pretty sorry to me. But Southern Pacific’s U50 is horrible.

The ugliest ever built was also the first ever built – the Tom Thumb Locomotive.

Well as far as ugly meaning something I would never want to see running on Prototype or Model railroad main lines (or any line for that matter!).

For me this would be a 3 way tie between:

[1] BL2 - ( The Mutated Ancestor of the GP7)

[2] Krauss Maffi Diesel Hydraulic. Southern Pacific and Rio Grande had these high horsepowered monstrosities that looked more like tugboats.

[3] New York Central Box Cab electrics. (Though respectfully, they were built tough!)

can you guys dig up some photos of these things? and post them…it would deffinately help in determining which are ugly…

anything form eroupe.

THE ugliest were those early 0-10-0 camelbacks the PRR had back in the mid 19th century, the ones that had the open cabs across the whole top of the engine. they looked like a ten wheeled snapping turtle. The French were also extremely proficient at building some really ugly locomotives back then also, it was as if the just because the British were building such attractive, elegant engines the French intentionaly went COMPLETELY the opposite direction and decided to make some truely ugly utilitarian un-glamorous steamers, a tradition they continued clear into the early 20th century. The Indian Government also deserve a special award for some of the ugliest most garrishly hideous steam engines of the 20th century. dont believe me look for a book that shows some of these ug-monsters …

Yes I would agree with you regarding India’s railway, As for the French well… They will dare to be different, Viva la Difference

Alco DL109

I have to agree with AntonioFP45, the EMD BL2 is the ugliest locomotive. An ugly duckling that never became a swan.

Any diesel without a high short nose

Those newer F40PH’s that metra uses, with the sloped windshield.

The Alco DL-109 is also an unattractive locomotive.

I believe I have won… http://www.exporail.org/collection/77_1w.jpg

Don’t let my dad hear that!!! I do think it’s ugly though. The ugly award also goes to the Ingalls Shipbuilding 4-S turret cabbed diesel, at least NS doesn’t own a lot of them!

No such thing.

The whole issue of ‘‘looks’’ is very much ‘‘eye of the beholder’’…like the swan amongst the ducks from a famous children’s story.[:0]
Don’t be a duck…enjoy each locomotive for it’s interest and engineered attributes.[:D][:D]
