Union Pacific Caboose

Can someone tell me what the big P means on the UP caboose? I want to purchase a caboose for my Veranda and want to get the right model. I saw a couple of models on e-bay and was wondering which would be the right one to get?

Try posting this on the prototype forum. They might be able to help you. I think I remember seeing what the P was somewhere, but I can’t remember where.

It means that it is a pooled caboose. Instead of that particular caboose being assigned to a specific conductor it is in Pool service meaning that it doesn’t have to get switched out at each division point yard thus saving time. It starts with the train at it’s originating yard and runs all the way through to the terminating yard.

Thanks for the quick reply. So would it be okay to run it with the Veranda?

The “P” was applied starting in the late '60’s (from “Cabooses of the Union Pacific Railroad”). The Verandas were retired in 1963-1964. So, prototypically, no.
