i didn,t know that the daokta southern got a DDA40X… when the hell did we het that!!!/??? i mean if we acutally want to get more traffic flow… rebuiild her!!! i mean with that 12 million tiger grant we just got. she would be easily abe to help our sd9’s. not saying there bad. but there not getting any older. really cool though. didn,t know we had one.

Why is 948 stuck in Kansas City?

This is all wonderful news for restorationist. It would be fantastic if Southern Pacific GS-6 4460 at St. Louis could recieve some attention to either cosmeticly refurbish or complete restoration or even it’s return home to California.

844 was slid in Texas a year or so ago - was quite an ordeal to get the drivers turned and reinstalled.

Banner year for UP Preservation my foot. 844 and 3985 sit out of service. Steam Shop in shambles. 949 stuck in Kansas City. Rotaries out of service.

It has several wheels that were slid flat.

If you go to Google Earth and look up Chamberlain, S.D. the DDA40X can be seen in the yard area. If you go to street view you can see a side view of it. The Google Earth street view driver must have been a railfan.

While it be nice to see a DD40X in freight service again I think it be a little to expensive for a rebuild.

Newstead and Thompson, I’ve been driving to Rapid City on business at least once a year for the last 22 years. That DD has been in Chamberlain ever since my first trip out there. Former owner, Alex Huff, told me he bought the engine at the UP sale for parts. I rode the DS in a hi-rail a couple of times. Really interesting. Track was blocked with stored hoppers west of the bridge earlier this year.

A great railfanning day or two in the Omaha area includes a closeup view of the Big Boy and Centennial at the Lauritson (sp?) botannical gardens and one of the best garden railroad layouts imaginable. Then take a look at Omaha Union Station, much of it original and nicely restored 1931 glazed terra cotta art deco. Cross the river to Council Bluffs and find the outstanding UP museum in the former library downtown. Noodle around the UP bridge between the two cities, on both sides, to observe the movements. Also hit the tower at North Platte, driving on US 30 between Omaha and the yard to observe the continuous traffic on the triple track.

The DDA40X’s were awesome locomotives! They were so awesome in fact that I went out and bought two of them!!! In HO scale of course. And those are awesome too!!

If they’re going to restore one in Mexico for the Mexicams to enjoy then they should help the folks at IRM restore that one for Americans to enjoy. Once again we are solving the workd’s problems before our own.
