I’ll be repainting an older Kato SD40-2 locomotive to the modern Union Pacific scheme. I just cant figure out if the top of the hood is colored. I haven’t found any photos on google. Its either gray or green. Can anyone help me?
This quote from the site “utahrails.net” might help:
“UP’s previous standard of anti-skid green on each unit’s short hood anti-glare panel and area around rear sand fill was changed to anti-skid gray in mid 1984, at the same time as the first former MP units were repainted to UP yellow and gray, with MP lettering and numbers.”
If you haven’t been to the site, consider visiting. There is a VERY long discussion about the painting of UP diesels. And lots of other neat info.
Of course, it doesn’t take a long time for flat surfaces in the railroad world that are painted green, grey, black, yellow, etc. to become a sort of dirty light greyish something. So, if there is some variation from the above quote, it’ll be pretty hard to spot except on a newly painted loco.

you could paint it a really nasty looking grey around the stack and rad fans, and primer grey around the top of the cab. almost all of them look like this within months of delivery
Oops. I guess I read too fast until I got to that “gray or green”. From those words, I thought you were referring to the “anti-glare” panels. Reading more slowly, I note that you used the phrase “top of the hood”. I think Tony’s suggestion has great merit, but I think you’ll get your pre-weathered colors from that nice paint article on the site I mentioned earlier.
