To this very day…
How many SD40-2’s are there still on the Union Pacific system[?]
Allan.
LOTS!!! I am not sure, but I doubt many have been retired…
Due to grammatical limitations, there can only be one North American Railroad with largest fleet of SD40-2’s.[;)]
I saw two pulling a 50 car train on sunday
I still see a LOT of SD 40-2s on the BNSF.
To add another question does anyone know what the UP did with all their special SD40-2’s (desert storm, '96 Olympics, United Way)? I know the '02 Olympic engines are still in their paint, did they afford the same right to the older units?
For numbering fans this UP United Way unit should be the UP 3300.

This web site is the diesel locomotive roster from the UNion Pacific’s web site, it lists all the SD-40-2’s and all the varients of the type still.
Drumming Trainfan asked about the Specially painted units, in particular the Desert Storm unit that was done in the Desert Camo paint scheme. Someone has recently posted a web address for a photo in its current paint scheme and its new owner, I think it was possibly in the railpics site.
Hope this helps.
Sam
I can think of at least 8 in service here in Sweetwater County alone.
Actually, UP’s SD40-2 fleet has taken a few hits in recent years. There are still probably around 700 or so in service–not many, considering the hundreds of units owned by SP, MP, CNW, a few Katys, and UP itself.
ive seen alot of up and sp units become part of the hclx fleet lately.
stay safe
Joe
UP and CP still have fairly substantial fleets of SD40-2’s although CP seems to be in the process of replacing their SD40’s with AC4400CW/ES44AC’s. BNSF inherited a bunch from both ATSF and BN but many of them have been returned to the lessor, retired or otherwise removed from the roster.
BN used to have over 700 but now BNSF doesn’t have that many. BNSFrailfan, i still can’t believe you’re becoming a UP fan. remember that thread you edited to “.”?
UP had the Largest in the country as of 1995 before the CNW Merger with 838.
OK…what good is a post about SD40-2’s without a pic or two?? =)
and another pic of SD40-2’s at work in Southern Nevada…this time at dusk, last summer…
I beleive FEC has several exUP’s SD40-2’s still in UP colors but renumdered for FEC. I do not know if the came direct from UP or were thru a broker? These were the first 6 motor units owned by FEC and there trial has lead to them placing an order with EMD for new 6 motor units. As always ENJOY.
Amazing testimony. A model line that’s 34 years old, millions of miles later still in service!
Truly built to last.
I miss what America used to be!

BTW Allan, I like that pic of the BNSF engines!

MCBPR. That “WE WILL DELIVER” looks so cool on that lead Unit don’t you think.

I just love this older UP logo. Allan.
