Does anyone out there know if the orange light on the roof of the DD40X was a strobe or a rotary beacon?

yes, both.

original had rotary, but 6936 currently has a strobe.

Thanks for the info. I needed to know if I set my decoder to make it look more like the beacon instead of a strobe. Rotating beacon it is.
