I was watching a locomotive that came past and saw the model number C44ACCTE, what does it mean or stand for?
The first C means it has 6 powered axles, the 44 is the horsepower in hundreds, the AC means it has AC traction motors. I am not sure on the CTE.
C=Six Axles
44=4400hp (actually 4390…but who’s counting rivets? )
AC=AC Traction Motors
CTE=Controlled Tractive Effort: This is a slight modification to the DPU system that lowers & limits the tractive effort produced by the loco as a remote on manifest trains.
They (the 5700 series) replaced the #9300-#9405 in Blue Mountain DPU Service (Hinkle, OR to Nampa, ID) in 2001. I spent many a trip riding them back and forth between Hinkle and La Grande the next couple of years after their arrival. The only constant in the universe is change…and after a couple of years they were bumped off of the Blues and have since been scattered to the proverbial four winds across the system.
