Can anyone advise me as to when a UP Engineer sees signal aspects, as shown in Rules 245B and 245D (yellow over red from the 1988 UP Signal Aspects and Indications timetable), how do they know which speed to follow: 40MPH or 30MPH?
The signals look exactly the same to me but Rule 245 B references 40MPH and 245D references 30MPH. Has there been a revision subsequent to 1988?
Thanks.
Probably the biggest revision has been in the rule numbers, so I’m not sure which rules you’re asking about. If it’s for the Advance Approach and the Approach indications, the former has a flashing yellow light and the latter does not. Give us the Indication of the signals you’re asking about, and we’ll be able to confirm this.
CARL:
Thank you; I increased the view size of what I was looking at to 400% and did see the flashing aspect to rule 245 B. I could not see it at 100%.
Thank you very much, again; I appreciate the quick response. I have been running RAILSIM and on one of the scenarios ( Victorville to SanBerdo) the performance report kept showing me speeding at 39MAX w/a limit of 30MPH and I was using the signal as a 40MPH.
I couldn’t find my copy of the 1988 ett, but did find one from 1994. The signal rule numbers seem to match what you describe from the 1988 ett.
As you have already noted, one has the yellow aspect flashing and one does not.
Besides the rule numbering, the name for 245B has changed. In 1988 (& 1994) it was Approach Limited. Now it is Advance Approach. The indication has also slightly changed, but the 40mph is still applicable.

PS Time for me to bone up on the rules, I have to attend rules class this Saturday and Sunday.
You, too, huh? I’m pretty sure I’ll get called in for one more rule test sometime this year. I’ve already heard of one surprising (and surprised!) co-worker not passing this thing the first time. Do you get to take yours in Boone, or do you have to export yourself?
I get to take mine in Boone. I haven’t been “officially” notified by CMS, but I was talking to a MOP today to verify: A, that I did have to take it, he thought I didn’t and B, the class was actually on Saturday and Sunday. They are holding it in the “pit,” where the train dispatchers used to be located in CNW days.
I worked with a conductor the other day who has taken the test. He said that the test didn’t have as many questions related to the study guide as usual. He said he received credit for answers he initially missed on questions using the special instructions (open book part) because there was conflict with the correct answers and what the SI said. I guess I’ll just wait and see.
Then next year, I have to recertify, so I get to take it again.
