Are they replacing existing concrete ties with new ones or replacing wood ties with concrete ones?
From the Google street view in Missouri Valley, it looks like there are already concrete ties in place.
I thought Concrete ties were suppose to last decades. Are (were) these ties defective?
At least we are all on the same page - as far as the question of the concrete ties go.
UP got some defective concrete ties a few years ago. They’re probably replacing them under warranty.
Related is this past News Wire story about defective concrete ties.
http://trn.trains.com/Railroad%20News/News%20Wire/2010/05/Boston%20commuter%20agency%20sues%20manufacturer%20of%20crumbling%20ties.aspx I watched BN replacing wood with concrete ties near Rock Island Dam (WA) in the 80’s. Can that machinery also replace concrete with concrete ties?
