Upheaval at Radio Shack!

You electronic guys might want to get into RS soon to take advantage of their liquidation in anticipation of their closing about 700 stores!

Mine should have closed long ago. It’s worthless. They’re probably still trying to make up their losses from The Incredable Universe disaster.

Good riddance!!!

Radio Shack stores are now called The Source, or so I thought.

I don’t know why but I keep going to the only one in the FLorida Keys and I have yet to walk out with the item I came to look for. Great place for elec projects if you are in grade school. Other than that as someone above accurately put it “worthless”.

I’d hate to say good riddance to a business when people could be out of work. I haven’t had much need for Radio Shack but when I have I always got what I came for.

I liked RadioShack and HATE The Source. First of all RadioShack was Canadian. Then the crappy Source took it over. The first time I was at the Source they were so rude and of no help. I will never buy anything from them![:(!]

My GE Profile Upright fridge bought from Incredible Universe is still running strong after 10 years. [:D]

I agree, RS is pretty well worthless, but I did buy a 15,000-35,000 rpm two speed Dremel from them for $29.99. Thier selection of capacitors, resistors and LED’s really bites, and so does their selection of really flexible 26 guage wire. If they close I won’t miss them. I now get all my caps and resistors, diode bridges at Fry’s.

You read that wrong. He said he never walked out with what he went in for. $5 for 5 resistors. $5 for 2 LEDs. [V]
Sorry! I thought you were quoting what Terry said.

I’m ambivalent. I haven’t got anything there for years, because they never had what I wanted and I gave up even trying.

I remember when they used to sell a lot more electronics, components, tools and such and I went there often. But eventually the store got overrun by toys, miscellanous nonsense (rotating disco ball lights and such) and the last time I went in, fully 1/3 of the store was a huge display offering cellphone service for twice what it cost at the cellphone kiosk 10 feet away…

I too can’t quite say “good riddance” when I know it means people are losing jobs and other misfortune. But I also can’t really say it’s a terrible blow and loss of a great store - that happened already, years ago.

Good their commercials these days are annoying.

Radio Shack was NEVER Canadian. Texas born and bred!

I never really knew how Rado Shack ever managed to keep going with so many stores. In a 5 mile radius from my house are THREE stores. In a 20 mile radius, more like 20. Maybe Brad remembers exactly how many RS stores are in the Lehigh Valley [:D]. When I worked there in college (and they actually had a decent selection of electronic parts!), there were two stores within walking distance of each other! At least they dont have to hand write the receipts these days - and then key them in to the computer after closing. Fun fun fun…

Hey - I am getting old - my memory isn’t that good [:)] Besides - I can’t count that high with my shoes on.

Actually - I think the original Radio Shack store(s) were from Boston - it was purchased by Tandy Leather which was a Texas based company in the 60’s or something like that.

Brad

i have no idea who actually used to own the radio shack stores in canada , but many years ago they split off or were bought from the US organization . last year circuit city bought all the canadian stores , after they did radio shack US told them to change the name . obviously RS US was concerned that people would think all RS stores worldwide were now owned by circuit city . so one day all the radio shack stores in canada closed and re-opened the next day with The Source signs on them . as far as i can tell that was the only difference .

selector … where is your info coming from ? no info on store closings on their web site

Not sure of their home city, but Tandy was one of the first popluar PC manufacturers along with Atari and Commodore, if I recall. I can’t recall which came first, Tandy or RS, I think the latter.

What are we Railfans gona do if we all need a new Scanner Radio? Most of mine are from Radio Shack. Allan.

Radio Shack in the US is under corporate ownership of Tandy out of Texas. Radio Shack Canada was operated by InterTAN out of Barrie Ontario. The Radio Shack name was a registered trademark licensed to InterTAN Canada Ltd., by Radio Shack Corporation (USA). When Circuit City purchased Radio Shack Canada, under court order, they were not allowed to continue using the Radio Shack trade name.

Mark.

I don’t care where they are from, I can tell you where I think they can go. They as said befor are worthless. There management (clear to the top) sucks. Glad to see them fold.

The mall stores are overrun with toys, very little in the way of electronic comments. There is a stand-alone store out on the main drag that is just the opposite.
Despite what most you say I will be sorry if this store does close. I have built several MR related projects with materials from RS.
