Upper Midwest where is it?

This place used to be home to some remnents of a Class 1’s ALCO fleet.

You sure didn’t need helpers on any of the grades around here.

At one time, you could probably catch a passenger train somewhat directly to Chicago-maybe even a Pullman.

At least 3 Class 1’s came here at one time. If a Class 1 does still interchange here, it probably is on someone else’s tracks.

Someday, this place might, once again, be considered a railroad town. (of sorts)

Where is this place?

Going to take a stab at it and say Rockford? But I may be wrong

Does this place share its name with a body of water ?

I have a feeling Murph is talking about somewhere close to home (where CNW’s Alcos ran), now operated by the DME, and accessed by a Class I via trackage rights.

Not having a South Dakota map handy, I’m going to guess Rapid City.

Let’s try Huron,SD

Oops. Scratch Huron, only two class 1 railroads.

I’m going to say Marquette, MI. The three Class 1’s would be LS&I, C&NW and SOO. The Alco fleet was the ex-N&W C628’s on C&NW which were later supplemented by C425’s. LS&I had a small Alco fleet, both new and secondhand, in its own right.

I must be the antedote for those people that have the hard to guess where is its![(-D]

The answer, which it appears Dale could see right through, is Huron, S.D.

I think, that in the good old days, CNW, Milwaukee Road, and Great Northern (coming in from the northeast, I believe) all served Huron. Granted, i could be off by one Class 1 (GN)

Someday, DM&E might have their maintenance operations there. Of course, that Mayo or Mayo not happen.[:o)]

My guess is Huron, South Dakota. The DM&E is occupying the former C&NW roundhouse up there. I and a few others from the local club toured it in December of 2001. Also I had once seen a piece about the Northwestern’s alco fleet in an old issue of Trains Magazine a long time ago.

I would guess either Marinette, Menominee or Escanaba. I had to pleasure of seeing many of the C&NW Alco units back in the seventies while living in Wisconsin.

The C&NW and GN did serve Huron, but it appears the Milwaukee Road did not, running their line 13 miles to the west through Wolsey. Oh-oh.

There is a box (sometimes) in the lower right corner to click on to enlarge this.

Two out of three ain’t bad. A miss is as good as 13 miles.[:I]
