uses for hair spray

i just read the july issue of model railroader and i saw that they mentioned usage of hairspray on scenery can it be used on cars and locos?

Yes, hairspray can have many uses, securing weathering powders/chaulk on rolling stock or engines, buildings etc…

I was reading a thread on weathering chalk and there was one that you could click on (twards the bottom) where they said to use hairspray to seal the weathering. I am painting some rolling stock today and think I might give a try. Mike

Take a look at the forums at www.modeltrainsweathered.com

I’ve used hair spray, generally any cheap Super Hold brand, to seal the chalks i’ve used for weathering, on cars and locos. Afterwards I then hit it with a light coat of dullcoat. The hair spray locks the chalks in place better and prevents the dullcoat from washing off the chalks, and it also removes that “sticky” feeling on the cars/locos left from the hairspray.

Check out this site for awsome info on weathering with chaulk, powders, pastels etc… These guys are amazing. Aggrojones and mellowmike`s work is inspiring.

been there done that

Hairspray has many scenery uses also. The unscented pump type works to hold ground foams (weeds and grasses) to trees, add color/ folliage to rock castings etc. There are many uses and combined uses with other adhesives. A good example would be: making simple trees. After trimming a selected sprig, spray w/ adhesive or dip into white glue, pull and spread polyfiber for the leaf canopy, mist with hair spray dust on selected grasses/ fine weed. repeat until desired effect is acheived.

Vely Intelesting!!!

I have used hair sprays for scenery but I would never have thought of using it as a weathering agent on rolling stock. I know that in regards to scenery the rule is:CHEAP EQUALS STICKY. Even if I had thought about it I would probably have gone with: EXPENSIVE EQUALS LIGHT. Will probably give it a shake in the future. Thanks for the heads-up!!!

I secure the chalk in place with a very light coat of Matte-Finish. After that dries, a heavier coat finishes the job. The hairspray crinkles up too much for my taste.
