Using ACC

I have a project that requires me to drill #70 holes in HO scale strap hinges (16 in all) and glue .018" wire into each hole. These will become the pivot for the hinge. I need to know a good method for applying such a minute amount of ACC without getting it all over the hinge or my fingers. Would you use gel or water thin ACC?

Any suggestions will help.

Thanks,

Use the thin stuff. Put a drop on a scrap of plastic and use the point of a pin to apply a tiny drop. Clamp the pin in a pin vise to make a tool.

If you’re using .018" wire, a #70 drill will be too big: instead, use a #76, which will give you holes only a couple of thou’ over-size. And why would you want to glue the hinge pin in place? If you’re worried about it falling out, simply make a short right-angle bend at the top, so that it can’t slip all the way through.

Drwayne, let me explain in greater detail.

The wire goes completely through one end of the hinge. I leave about 1/16" exposed on each side. Then, a forked piece is put over the wire and it forms the pivot. The hinge is cemented to the door and the forked piece is cemented to the door opening.

The building is a Kanamodel 2 stall enginehouse.

Don’t use water anywhere near ACC. Moisture helps ACC set quickly - look at what happens when you get it on your skin.

Like someone else said use the runny variety and use a pin to apply very small qaunities at a time.

Sorry, I thought that you were speaking of two-piece hinges, with one piece fastened to the door and the other to the frame.

Are you sure you’ve got your glasses on? He said “watery thin” not water![:)]
