While Kato N scale unitrack itself might not be the most prototypical track out there, it can be made into a lot more than loops! The track, as you probably now, is more economical to buy in master and variation sets, but they only come in loops and things that attach to yards. I used three V1s, one V4, one V6, and one V3 to build my N scale Boston and Maine Railroad set in Fitchburg, MA in Fall 1983. IT is a 12 foot long 2 foot wide shelf layout with one L section that is two feet long and juts out an extra 2 feet (total 4 feet wide).
Some pictures would be helpful to demonstrate what you mean!
With just a little effort, you can make Kato Unitrack look a lot more realistic. All you need is a little paint and ballast.
