varney parts

anyone know of a supplyer who would have a door or a pair of doors that would fit the old 40’ varney boxcar ? southern railways systems model railroad culb contact southernenginer@yahoo.com

Good luck on the doors! If you cant find them, you could place your old model on a car service track [ RIP track, Repair In Place] with an assortment of doors laying about and a crew of HO service guys sorting through the collection looking for a replacement.

I have an old Varney power pack from my Dad’s HO layout from the late 50s era. It has a burned out selenium rectifier and fried transformer. The rheostat is still OKI should replace the transformer and put in a silicon bridge… that would make it operational, at least as a conversation piece. The Varney F7 simulated realistic momentum by having a centriphical clutch on the motor shaft. at rest the shaft would spin freely, and only begin to grip as you moved the throttle up. It was VERY effective unless it got oiled. Then it was a disaster as the loco would just sit and rev. Oh, memories of ancient times with my Dad. I sure miss him!

Hey Dads out there, be sure to offer your daughters the opportunity to join you in the train hobby, my Dad did. Some girls will enjoy it! RRing is still with me long after my Dad has left this world. My husband likes trains too

Try contacting Chris Rossbach, 135 Richwood Dr., Gloversville, NY 12078, or phone (518) 725-4446. He runs a Varney parts business; has a catalog available too.

Varney parts would be likely very difficult to find. Why not use doors from another Mfger?

I don’t have any doors, but have a few Varney things left. A couple cars and the parts are mostly trucks less wheels and coupler boxes if your find a need for any of these. Hey Jen girls are in this hobby. I know of a few wives and there kids, and my grand daughter is always doing something with trains. She has her own area on my layout and loves it.

southernenginer;
You also may want to go to a couple of shows like a GATS Greenberg or local NMRA/Club shows. There is always someone at these shows selling off old, used, NIB but never built equipment. I have some of the old kits as well and have been very successful in finding pieces/parts to complete or upgrade the older stuff I have. Most dealers won’t have these type of stuff unless they deal with estate sales and the like so look for individuals or groups like clubs/NMRA divisions selling off their unwanteds.

Meant to add: Jennifer RR…
I know about getting girls involved. My daughter, as a pre-teen got me to teach her how to build kits. She got to where she was building and superdetailing them and entering them into contests and beating me! She discovered FP softball soon there after and didn’t do anything else until after college and boys. She asked me recently if I had anything she could build for the layout.

Is your box car the outside braced car?
Life/like used the same Varney tooling for their trainset line and the doors should be a direct replacement.

Jennifer, my wife and two daughters are very involved with Our railroad .The girls are 15 and 17 and like to do scenery and kit building for the layout,so does my wife .I was going to change our 14x17 into a smaller size and was told by them not to do it.
