Looking for information on a location, there is a famous photo of a steam loco stopped at a large rock cut in the area of Mt. Holly, Vermont, I have tried to find it on google maps to no avail, it is around Summit, and Healdville, no one seems to know the exact spot, anyone out there familiar with this location?? a lot of rock was removed in the cut for the track to be located.
There are a number of rock cuts on the ex-Rutland line between Rutland and Bellows Falls including at least two near Mt. Holly. One of the problems with locating things in Vermont from satellite images is that the stae is about 95% forested, compared to 10% or so at the turn of the 20th century. If you can post the photo it may be possible to locate the site.
Having run into the same thing in the Adirondacks, I can identify with the forest growth thing RCDRYE mentions. I’ve seen pictures that would be impossible to duplicate today due to the trees that have grown since the area was logged over.
mapper.acme.com has an option to compare the topo map and the satellite image just by clicking buttons. The resolution is different, but it can be handy. There’s a spot just north of Healdsville that might be promising to you.
Thanks for both tips, I must update my computer, I did find one visible rock cut at a transmission line intersection with the tracks at 1.1 mile NW of Grahamville and a very large rubble pile of enormous rocks at 0.81 miles NW of Healdville, thanks again for the tips and that new site : mapper.acme.com, I will try and pass thinformation on to the Historical societies @ Mt Holly and area.
Does every place in Vermont end in “ville” ?
Only those that don’t end in “ton” or “town…” [swg]
Acme Mapper used to offer the USGS aerial photos, but that option has disappeared. They were something of a time capsule.
