VIA Rail Canada records best holiday performance in years
Despite this article, which is just a paraphrase of a Via Rail press release, their traffic has been stagnant for ten years. They have consistently carried about 4 million passengers a year, while Amtrak’s passenger numbers have increased significantly over the same period of time.
Here’s hoping Via Rail’s services expand again and passenger revenues grow so they’ll make some true dough!
Canada has had a change of government. Justin Trudeau is the new Liberal PM. Be interesting to see what happens with VIA.
Former Conservative prime minister Harper was looking into selling off VIA into self sufficient operation that could of threaten to close more lines than ever by limiting service to so many normal train travelers. Now more train travelers are confident that VIA will stay stable under new Liberal prime minister Trudeau.
Garth: With the new prime minister, hopefully, things will turn around and VIA will see the increase in ridership similar to Amtrak’s.
