Video: Building Model Railroader’s HO scale Virginian Ry. part 5

David thanks for the project layout fix! Layout is coming along nicely!!

HAHA Dave Your hilarious!!! Thanks for the update look forward to more, hopefully they’ll come faster!!!

“do de do it’s coming along nicely just have to load it in the van. Great front fits…CRAP!” Ah David I think we have all been there my friend! lol Anyway, I hope you post more journals up soon! I am in the process of building the “Virginian” right now! I am getting the plywood this weekend and hope to make the cuts! One thing I wanted to ask though, when you did you’re elevations how did you measure? I just want to make sure I get the 4" spots correct. Did you measure from the top of the plywood to the top of the riser itself and and a 1/2" for the plywood? That would make the risers 3 and 1/2" then correct?

That was to funny…thanks for the laugh Dave! So far so good-will be starting my layout in the weeks to come

Guys, I love you all at Kalmbach. Have been reading MR since the early 60’s, but I have to say, this video part 5 is useless as far as building this project, especially to a layout building “novice” like myself.
Time should have been spent showing how you attach the risers and to where, and why and how you laid cork under and through the Green Hill section without laying track on it, which seems kind of backwards. Wouldn’t you lay all the cork and track through the tunnel(s) first, before putting on the Green Hill section above it? Otherwise, how would you get your hands in there to lay track?
I think more time and effort also should have been used to show how exactly you built and attached the “swing down” section where the station is. Also more time showing the “metal pins and connectors” you use to attach the staging yard for example, which the bench work diagram does not show. Finally, more should have been explained about the “fold up” legs on the staging section. Please remember some of us are beginners or novices. The only other layout I built was over 40 years ago.

Could you have used folding or removable legs?

Thanks David and team for a great video.

It’s reassuring to know that projects don’t always work out perfectly the first time…even for the pros. : )

Brian - did you get an answer to your question about the height of the risers?

Couldn’t agree more with Steve Campbell’s comments. I was really looking forward to seeing the hows and whys of the risers etc.

This is a nice layout but It’s Ho and I haven’t done anything in HO since 1980. How about foing a layout project on a 4 x 8 sheet of plywood? That way you can show what is possible on a piece of plywood in N. It should be possible to get about 4 times as much on that benchwork.

To say that I saw that happening (rotflmbo - “b” = behind) would be a lie; however, I immediately said to myself “Self, he should have turned the layout end for end because it would have fit if David had pushed the taller end in first and then tilted the other (lower) end up.”

I realize this advice come about 7" to late and without knowing exactly how much extra height is going to be added at some later date.

I am also wondering if it might have helped some if you had turned the VAN end for end instead???

Ah yes, the best laid plans of mice and men oft go awry…
Reminds me of my occupation, except I have to fit the truck under the bridge…

Hi Dave,

I have to further agree with Steve from Colorado. More explanation on the location and installation of the risers and track support structures would be very helpful. Further information on the removeable / fold up sections and the connectors would be useful for anyone trying to build a sectional layout.

This video was a waste. Who cares if you can fit the layout in a van or elevator. Lets see some more detail on the benchwork construction.

David -

I am really enjoying this series and am looking forward to seeing the finished product at iHobby in Cleveland or Trainfest 2012.

Makes me glad I live in California. Wait, it’s 7 am and 30 degress outside. Never mind! Thanks for some great videos!

Dave,
Greetings and Happy New Year!
I am never much of a complainer but I must agree with Steve Campbell from Colorado. Several episodes of this series have skipped telling and showing how to do very important portions of the layout for items not necessarily trivial but certainly not nearly as important to the modeler. Cutting out and installing the elevated sections, installing risers, even as mentioned showing more of the bench work construction.
I know you can’t show every detail and the Magazine articles cover some but nothing beats a video how to.
Sincerely,
Mark

Alot of our portable layout has legs that fold up into the layout. We did this for quick setups at shows.

David, remember the old contractors saying “measure twice cut once”.
