Video: Layout tour of Rick Van Laar's HO scale CSX model railroad

I am a BIG fan of CSX coal trains. The layout is amazing.

It looks great!! So much railroad in 4x8 sheet of plywood. Just outstanding can’t wait to see the Feb 2011 issue.

Very nice and Thank You for sharing it with us. Happy Holidays.

nice job on layout

looks great cant wait for the mag to see more

WOW thats value on a 4 x 8

Instant fan of a fantastic layout! Like to do simular with “N” scale. I’ve even got an American that I love to set up for “Holiday” runs! Anyone know where I can find a Old West woodsider passenger train (minus engine cause I got that)? he he he!

Looking forward to reading the article, very convincing modeling on a 4x8! Awesome!

it’s great to see some csx layouts and this looks like a good one.i’m a fan of the csx cause my son and best friend work for the csx.my son works out of lima ohio and garret ind. and my friend out of the walbridge ohio to detroit area so i get a lot of info of whats going on.keep up the good work.

Enjoyed this video, a great looking layout in a small place.

Congrats to Rick Van Laar on excellent use of scene divider, scenery, weathering & lighting! I always appreciate protypical low speeds especially with freight service. I’m a fan of coal hauling roads as well. Thanks again to David Popp always there with fine video work.

Thank you for the great idea of a track plan. I am looking forward to start rebuilding.

What an outstanding piece of modelwork. The whole thing!
The scenery, structures, details, and rolling stock - it’s all there. Having done a bit of railfanning in the coal regions, I can feel a definite connection with the scenes pictured. I can say, “I’ve seen that!” And for being in 4x8, that’s the highest accolade of any that can be said of the effort you’ve shown us Rick. A person can think small in his layout square footage, but come up BIG on the results as you have.

You did it right by using short cars…even the unit trains look like unit trains when they are 40 footers and shorter. It just astounds me that it’s a 4x8! I especially like the town scene and the grain elevator complex. You did a great job in designing the footprint of everything.

great vid. catchy music

Just reviewed this layout in the Feb 2011 issue of MR. This video compliments the article nicely and shows what can be achieved in even a relatively small area.Keep up the great work MR and include more smaller layouts such as these to inspire the masses.

The imagination for this layout is a class act. Well done. You have set a new standard for us, as Model Rail Road builders to shoot for.

I’m old enough to remember John Allen’s Gorre & Dapheted.
(78 years) I think he would have definitely approved of what you did with his deign. Enjoy.

Terrific work and excellent design in a 4X8 layout, and good use of a backdrop/divider. Congrats to Rick for a well thought out design end execution.

Very nice! It helped with a few ideas on my layout.
I especially like the weathering and the background painting.

I,m new to the model train hobby, and I hope my work turns out as good as Mr Van Laar`s. My wife and I were impressed.
