I’m scratchbuilding a sanding tower for my diesel servicing facility. I’m familiar with the commercially-available sanding tower models but somehow none of them fit my track/space dimensions, so thus the need to scratchbuild. I’d like to see a relatively modern loco (1990s to today) getting filled with sand to familiarize myself with the tower mechanism and the process, but the only videos I can find online are just locos dumping sand for traction…any links of loco sand fillling anywhere?
Hi, I’ve been researching this myself for some time now.
This earlier reply by JaBear is very useful - IMO it is very good.
Also this manufacturer’s website has absolutely stacks of info. on masses of Products that could make you completely rethink how you intend to model a Diesel Pad; RYSX Railyard Supply Co.
Especially the sections about ‘Tanks’ and ‘Equipment by System Type’.
See if you can spot recycled CSX 6525 GP40 in the ‘Treated and Non-Treated Water Systems Equipment’ section.

Hi Maxman, thank you for your reply.
This more like what I am after, something very Modern where the only throwback to the Steam era might be when there is a Turntable and/or a Truncated Roundhouse retained.
It is particularly the Sand, delivered by Road (Bagged or Bulk-carrier) or Rail Hopper, how is it loaded into the Silo and then into the Sand Tower, or direct into the Sand Towers?
Same for the Fuel, delivery and the On-site Logistics of getting it into a Loco Fuel Tank.
What I like about modern Pads are the Fuel Tanks and Sand Silos, the Gantries for all the Pipework, the Sand Blowers and Dust Extractors, Air Compressors, Tanks for Lube Oil, Waste Oil and Waste Water (including Loco Cab Toilets) These are the types of things I have Designed - but not for Railroads.
I’ve not seen many model R/Rs that include these things. There must be more to it than switching a Sand Hopper and Tank Cars, to just sit there posing next to the scenery.
I feel that a new Book specifically about Modern Diesel Railroad Servicing Pads could be a good subject for an author such as Jeff Wilson and Firecrown Media to consider?
I know you are probably sorry you asked now, but Diesel Pads are something I would really like to model 110% for my Layout and it’s menagerie of visiting Locos.

Hi,
I just purchased and downloaded this from the Trains.com Store
Structures for diesel locomotive terminals – Trains.com Store
There is a good deal of info. about Sanding Facilities and it is good value and worth a read, with good input by the late Jim Hediger.
