Are any of the DVD videos on weathering worth doing? I haven’t done much weathering and what I have done was over 15 years ago. Does anyone have any favorites that show some good techniques for weathering locomotives and rolling stock?

I have not yet seen a DVD on weathering, but there is some literature available, which may be of interest to you. In his Kalmbach book “Mountain to Desert”, Pelle Soeeborg describes his weathering techniques and there have been some hints and tips in the weekly MR videos of “Cody´s Office”. Just look for the modeling tips.
Well, they are not DVDs, but if you go to www.youtube.com and enter HO car weathering in the search box, you’ll come up with some different approaches to car weathering that you might find useful or interesting. Be aware, however, that some of those videos might be accompanied by chatter and/or music that you might (or might not) find offensive. But then once you determine which ones those are, you can avoid them later.
I saw a two part series advertised by scottymason.com It’s called “Weathering Freight Cars” Vol 1 & 2. Here’s a description of them that I found. Has anyone ever seen these or heard of the person in the video?
"In “Weathering Freight Cars, Volume 1”, Mike Rose will show you his famous weathering techniques using artists’ oils. Watch as Mike shows you how easy it is to add realistic weathering to your fleet of freight cars.
Mike Rose has been an active model railroad builder and kitbasher since his early teens. Even back then he was interested in weathering. His first attempt involved blowing shaved chalk dust onto the pilot of a freshly Dull-coted PC GP-35. His first articles appeared in Railroad Modeler Magazine at age 16., and since then, Mike has had articles in all the major model railroad magazines. To date, he has had over 70 articles published. Mike has also contributed photos and articles to a number of prototype and modeling books. Mike is the owner of Mike Rose Hobbies (www.mrhobby.com), an Internet hobby shop and modeling information website. Mike has become a regular on the Prototype Modelers Meet circuit, giving his popular clinics all over the country for the past seven years. This is his first DVD."
There is another two part series called “HO Weathering & Detailing”.
The reason I asked about videos is that I’m off on the days my wife works and spend that time watching our son. I can’t get the time to sit down and focus on reading but I can get a bit of time to sit down and watch something on the tv so I thought the videos might be a good option.

Micro Mark has two DVDs by Dave Frary, one for rolling stock, the other on structures.
Good luck,
I have not only heard of Mike Rose, but had the pleasure of meeting him at the Craftsman Structure show last November. He is a really nice chap, and what he does not know about modern freight cars is probably not worth knowing.
I own the Scotty Mason DVD featuring Mike Rose and have found it to be very helpful. The main point/technique I took away from the DVD was the use of artist oil paint for the purposes of creating rust with texture on a freight car.
The WP hopper in this image was my first attempt at using the techniques from the DVD, I was really quite pleased with the outcome.

Simon, Thanks for the info on the videos and the car you did in your photo looks great! If you’d never done any weathering before at all do you feel those vidoes would be good information to start with? Does he cover other techniques besides the oil paint like chalk, airbrushing, etc? Thanks again for the info.
John
John, this DVD is really quite focused on the use of oils and does not cover airbrushing and chalk weathering to any degree at all, in fact I don’t think it even mentions it. I suspect that the Vol 2 of the series would actually be better for you if that is more your interest. I don;t have that DVD so can’t comment, but the description looks like it would cover these aspects in more detail for you.
Thanks again Simon. I may get both videos. I’m not really set on any one technique right now, I’d just like to learn and try several and see what I like.
