Vintage Lionel Train set. Just passed on to me which is (we think) the 3rd generation.

Hello to all,

I just got set up with a password to see if any one can help me find out how old this train is and where I can get extra assories for it.

The train is a Vintage lionel 1664 1630 & 1631 I believe it was my grand fathers. It was then passed on to my mother once her father passed, and now that my Mother has passed as well I now have it.

How old is it? where can I find a web site to purchase extras for it?..

Thanks,

A quick search says that this is pre-war Lionel, so it’s at the very least 67 years old. I’m not an expert on Lionel, so that’s about all I can tell you.

My Marx set is at least 60 years old and runs inspite of being stored for a very long time in a damp basement.

My sons love it. Trains need to run. Not sit around taking up shelf space.

Sounds like they had some TLC.
My vintage Lionel trains inherited from my Dad are 72 years old this Christmas, and still running on their original motors!
I have two of them, a steam engine and a Commodore Vanderbilt steam engine. One pulls freight cars including a Sunoco tanker,an operating gondola car , a boxcar with sliding doors, and red caboose, the other pulls three passenger cars.
I also have some other Lionel trians and one Marx from the 1960’s my Dad’s boss gave to me because his kids just didn’t ever play with them.

Lionel 1664 is a pre-war locomotive that could be worth several thousand dollars to a collector if it is in relatively good condition.

Actually, the Lionel 1664 loco is a common prewar engine.

Made from 1938-1942 they usually are worth 50-80.00

The gunmetal grey 1664 can fetch up to 150.00

The 1630,and1631 passenger cars were made during the same period 1938-1942

If they are Light Blue/Aluminum they go for about 45.00

If they are Light Blue/Grey they go for about 60.00

So much for being worth “thousands”

These are very well made prewar trains, and a family tradition,so I would keep 'em,and run them like they were made for.

lWell, excuse me for trying to help and going by information gleaned from a video about the history of Lionel trains, E-Bay, and other sources. Google indicates that this particular engine number was a pre-war version – if Lionel also made it after the war, the big question now is, which one does the OP have?
