Waffle House

Okay earlier this week there was a great suggestion that in addition to the mobile homes was building I needed to have a Waffle House right nearby to feed the residents. A link was sent to me of a kit for 80 bucks! I figured I can do it for a lot less than that. So here is the first shot. Its sub-walls and windows right now. Next up will be window framing and then the brick veneer overlay, overhead canopy, name and other stuff to complete the scene. I will use this thread for further updates. That is all.

Thats going to be interesting keep me posted

Alright. Brick fascia installed. Window framing started… not yet done. But well on the way.

John:

Great project!

Are you going to detail the interior? With all that glass I would hope so.

Dave

hi jbu50

Make mine with honey thanks and the coffee is flat white with two sugars.[:)]

With that amount of window space the structure is going to need an interior no matter where you put it front or back of the layout.

looks good.

regards John

I know of at least two IHOPs that are very close to railroad tracks so this has a prototype of a sort.

Is the building going to have sound effects? They don’t call them belchin’ waffles for nothing you know. [;)]

Usually the word waffle is used in the hobby in connection with someone who can’t decide whether to model in HO or N, or use DC or DCC.

Hey guys

At this point in time I do not plan to detail the interior. The thought of adding all those tables and benches plus a counter does not thrill me. I’ll probably just put view blocks in for now. But leave the roof removable so if some day I do get a wild hair I can add the interior details. I do plan on having a number of cars in the parking lot with people standing around talking to give the impression of a thriving business. No sound affects. maybe have the smell of coffee beans coming from under the layout.

The shop will not really be near the tracks. It will be in front of the trailer park which will back up to the tracks.

See attached diagram.

Sound effects at a waffle house would be clanking dishes

I think any realistic Waffle House should include badly faded yellow sign backgrounds and a missing or loosely dangling letter! Are there any new Waffle Houses?

Thats a good question Waffle House seems to be everywhere south of MD on the east coast wonder why they don’t expand. Unlike a Sonic drive in for example their business is not as climate sensative Yet sonic has expanded northward. But this is a layout forum and i digress.

They are re-building a new Waffle House just down the street a bit from my place. But instead of the red facade I have seen on others, this one has a yellow facade with large black letters. I may take a bunch of pictures and model mine more on that line rather than the red. We shall see.

For the space challenged but still waffleloving, I ran across a TINY Waffle shop. Haven’t built it yet but I think it will fit well in my beachfront tourist district.

It is a model of what would be a tiny prototype (if it is a real place…) and it is in N scale.

I think the maker of the kit is tiny also, only found him by accident on “that-auction-site.” Also sells resin wheels for the ones my resin vehicles have lost.

Disclaimer: I have no financial interest in this prouct or firm- except I like to see interesting small model making firms stay around so I can get neat stuff. And I am not waffling on that.

Ohhh! I just stole that jpeg, I want something like that on my layout and that streamline building looks perfect. My layout is 1/24 scale so I’ll be bashing it. Love waffles.

A year after Hurricane Katrina we drove directly through the devastation along the coasts of FL, AL, MI and LA. In quite a few places there was nothing standing for miles, except for a bright, shiny new Waffle House surrounded by mounds of gray wreckage. No weathering needed, they looked like they had just come out of a kit box…

In a sense it did come out of a kit Pre fabricated buildings are quite common in fast good. I remember a Starbucks going up in 2 weeks.

A Waffle House? I have been watching this thread (with knife and fork at the ready) but what I need to know is: Is these where your scale politicians go for lunch?

LIONS just have to know. Politicians are not bad, you know, they taste like chicken, but can be a little tough. I wonder if anybody has a recipe for Waffled Politician.

ROAR

Making progress on the Waffle House model. I ordered 2 sets of diner tables that normally go in a passenger dining car but they look like they will be just fine inside the restaurant.

John:

Glad to hear that you changed your mind on detailing the interior.

Are you thinking about lighting the interior too? Having the lights on would add a lot of realism even during daytime.

Dave

Use Fiber Optic lighting, this way you can have lights hanging over each table!

ROAR

As I recall waffle houses use simple globes for light. Thinking if you get some cheap fake pearl beads and glue them on the end of the fiber you can simulate this.
